Today is the last day of enrollment for GAC Fall Art Clubs for Kids and Teens!

From September through December, our Art Club for Kids and Art Club for Teens will experiment with a variety of materials, techniques, and artistic styles while building their confidence and discovering their individual creative voices.

Each weekly Wednesday session is taught by a talented local artist and features engaging art projects designed to encourage imagination, self-expression, and creative problem-solving.

Join us for GAC’s ArtWalk Market September 12, featuring local artists Becca Hovey of Lou Boggin, Taylor Gonzalez, and Ryan Moya, live music by Dem Roots, and small-batch, made from scratch, ice cream from Fat Cat Creamery.

As both a mother and an artist, embracing the Xerox copier and scanner as a way of manipulating photos in her collaging process allows Annie May Johnston the immediacy she needs in her creative process, while still giving her the space to play and experiment.

Currently on view in the 1878 Gallery at GAC until November 1, Annie May Johnston’s exhibition, “Dark Enough to See,” wraps the room in scanner collages and Xerox copies with no beginning and no end. Punctuating the surface are necklaces embedded with hair, letter beads, and objects emerging from the wall - metal silhouettes of the artist’s hand acting both as creator and receiver.

The installation forms a continuous loop, mirroring the expansive reach of the universe, and serves as a space for contemplation to see beyond what is known, where stars are born in cold, dark, dense places with pressure, darkness, and time.

Johnston describes the experience as “a long journey back, toward whoever is forming on the dark side of the moon.”

Exploring boredom and failure as productive states, the sculptures within Cody Arnall’s exhibition, “Looking Up Looking Down,” are prompted by the observation of the mundane debris encountered in his daily life.

Our August ArtWalk welcomed two new exhibitions to our upstairs galleries: Annie May Johnston’s “Dark Enough to See” and Lauren Christlieb’s “Wish You Were Here.”

Artist and mother, Annie May Johnston is working at the margins of printmaking, combining new technologies with traditional processes. Through installation, objects, and prints, she grapples with motherhood, mortality, and inherent failure.

Lauren Christlieb is also a printmaker, as well as an educator, and the founder of Red Bird Press, a community print shop dedicated to making printmaking accessible through classes, collaboration, and shared studio space. Her artistic practice explores family relationships, memory, and inheritance through the recreation of kept objects, old handwriting, and found imagery.

Learn how to draw the face at different angles, master facial proportions and features, and play with color and design to convey personality in Portraits 101 with Jessica Antonelli at Galveston Arts Center.

After this four-week class, you’ll feel confident drawing realistic faces and be ready to continue your portraiture journey. This class is perfect for complete beginners, or those with a love of drawing portraits who want to evolve their style.

Jessica’s experience teaching students from ages 3 to 83 has given her a unique perspective in how humans develop creativity throughout a lifetime. Having taught over 1,000 students of all ages how to draw, paint and create, she is able to identify the sequences of most common mistakes and pitfalls in both technique and mindset to avoid.

Plan your visit in to GAC for the last week to see Jasmine Zelaya’s exhibition, “Tropical Depression,” on view in the Brown Foundation Gallery.

“Tropical Depression” confronts how the banana industry, the United Fruit Company, and U.S. corporate influences changed the course of Honduras’ history, with the impact still effecting its people today.

Jasmine Zelaya’s Artist Talk, available for you to watch on our website, shares her research, including personal memories from her family members, into the exploitation of workers in the Honduran banana industry.

It’s the last week to see Komie Kim Le’s “All-You-Can-Eat,” on view in the 1878 Gallery at GAC.

“All-You-Can-Eat” features everyday objects and food from Vietnamese American life - crab pots, baskets, fish sauce bottles - transformed into exuberant ceramic sculptures that reveal immigrant memory, humor, and resilience.

Join us for the ArtWalk Opening Reception of Lauren Christlieb’s exhibition, “Wish You Were Here,” in the Brown Foundation Gallery at GAC, August 8th, from 6PM - 9PM.

“Wish You Were Here” is inspired by several carousels of Kodachrome 35mm slides passed down to her through three generations. These 2 x 2 inch positive color film frames were ubiquitous to family photo nights from the mid-twentieth century and can often be found in estate sales or thrift stores today.

Her work reveals the shift in our relationship to physical photographs and shared experiences, as technology has moved us to individual devices and terabytes of stored images rarely seen once taken.

Enlarged to ten times their original scale, her slides bridge this analog technology with printmaking processes, resulting in objects rather than prints alone. The occasional scribbled inscriptions describing the images and the frame that once held the image in a slide projector can equal, if not become more important than, the image itself.

Lauren Christlieb brings attention to the details that typically go unnoticed while simultaneously allowing the viewer to see the image clearly.

Artist Talks will begin at 6:30PM in our upstairs galleries.
