General Orders, No. 3, was issued on June 19, 1865, announcing to the people of Texas that all enslaved people were free.

From a stable to a visitor's center to our "Galveston's Juneteenth Exhibit - "And Still We Rise"" exhibit, the carriage house of the 1859 Ashton Villa has seen a lot.

James Moreau Brown built Ashton Villa in 1859. A significant amount of the brickwork, both in the house and here in the carriage house, was done by a brick mason slave named Aleck. Aleck's story is highlighted at both our Ship To Shore experience at the Galveston Historic Seaport and at "And Still We Rise..."

The work being done now, thanks to a matching Texas Preservation Trust Fund grant from Texas Historical Commission, includes new mortar and stainless steel tie rods, ensuring the building continues to tell Aleck's story and others for another 166 years and more.

This Friday, Galveston Historical Foundation welcomes its members to the 1859 Ashton Villa for the 2025 Annual Meeting starting at 5:30 p.m.

The main order of business is the election of officers and directors for 2025-2026, along with an overview of GHF’s accomplishments over the past fiscal year. The GHF annual meeting includes complimentary beverages and gourmet hor d’oeuvres and features the “passing of the gavel” from the outgoing board president Cesar Hernandez, to incoming president Clay Rogers.

The Prairie View Interscholastic League existed from 1920 to 1970 to govern extracurricular activities for Black high schools in Texas during segregation, including games at Galveston's Kermit Courville Stadium. That stadium, the sole surviving structure of that era, and its story are the focus of today's Foundation Conversations lecture with author Greg Samford.

Join us tomorrow, Tuesday, June 17, for a Juneteenth 2025 celebration on the historic grounds of the 1838 Menard House, 1605 33rd Street—the oldest residence in Galveston—where history comes alive through outdoor programs and living history reenactments.

Discover the stories of Juneteenth and the Underground Railroad as interpreters portray the voices of freedom-seekers and trailblazers who shaped our nation’s journey toward emancipation. The Buffalo Soldiers will host an encampment, offering an inspiring glimpse into their legacy and encouraging youth to connect with this proud heritage.

Families are invited to bring sack lunches and enjoy picnicking under the open sky. This educational and engaging event is FREE and open to the public—come celebrate freedom, resilience, and community where history was made.

People of African descent were some of Galveston’s earliest residents, and although they came to the island enslaved, they retained mastery of their culinary traditions. As Galveston’s port prospered and became the “Wall Street of the South,” better job opportunities were available for African Americans who lived in Galveston and for those who migrated to the island city after emancipation, with owner-operated restaurants being one of the most popular enterprises.

Author Ella Lewis will join us today at 1 p.m. at Galveston's Juneteenth Exhibit - "And Still We Rise", 2328 Broadway, for our Saturday mini-lecture.
