For a few years, the most famous pirate in the Gulf of Mexico called Galveston Island home. And people have been digging for his gold ever since. ๐Ÿดโ€โ˜ ๏ธ

Jean Lafitte set up his base, which he called Campeche, on Galveston Island around 1817. From there his ships preyed on Spanish vessels, and his settlement grew into a rough little town of sailors, smugglers and traders, with Lafitte's own red-painted house at its center. In 1821 the United States Navy finally ordered him out, and before sailing away he set fire to the place. โš“

What he left behind was a legend. Stories say Lafitte buried chests of gold and silver somewhere along the Texas coast, under a lone oak, near a bayou, or out on the salt marshes, and treasure hunters have been turning over sand for two centuries. So far nobody has found proof, but the legend has never faded. ๐Ÿ’ฐ If you found Lafitte's treasure tomorrow, what is the first thing you would do with it?

From the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU! ๐Ÿดโ€โ˜ ๏ธโš“๐Ÿดโ€โ˜ ๏ธ
As the owner and producer of the Galveston Pirate Festival, I am overwhelmed with gratitude for everyone who helped make this yearโ€™s Galveston Pirate Festival Week such an incredible success. This event was bigger, stronger, and more successful than last year and that would not have been possible without the amazing community that embraced it.

To every patron who purchased a ticket, attended an event, dressed in pirate attire, brought your family, shared our posts, invited your friends, or simply helped spread the word: thank you. You are the reason we do this. Seeing so many smiling faces, creative costumes, families making memories, and pirates filling Galveston with excitement made every long day and late night worthwhile.

To our generous sponsors and community partners: thank you for believing in this festival and helping us bring the vision to life. Your support allowed us to create a full week of activities that celebrated Galvestonโ€™s history, businesses, culture, and unmistakable pirate spirit. We are incredibly grateful for your trust and partnership.

Thank you to our participating venues and local businesses for opening your doors and helping Pirate Festival Week reach across the island. Every gathering, activity, presentation, performance, and special event added something unique to the week. This festival is about more than one day it is about bringing people together, supporting local businesses, attracting visitors, and creating an experience that belongs to Galveston.

To our performers, presenters, entertainers, pirate crews, vendors, artists, makers, photographers, production teams, staff members, and volunteers: thank you for sharing your talents, energy, time, and passion with us. You created the atmosphere, brought the characters to life, welcomed our guests, and helped keep everything moving. So much work happens behind the scenes, and I want you to know that your efforts were seen and deeply appreciated.

I also want to thank Moody Gardens for providing a wonderful home for our main festival day and for helping us welcome pirates and families from near and far.

Most importantly, thank you to the Galveston community. Your enthusiasm has helped transform an idea into a growing annual celebration. Watching the Galveston Pirate Festival become bigger and more successful than last year has been an emotional and rewarding experience for me. Growth does not happen by accident it happens because people choose to believe in something, support it, and become part of it.

As the owner of the Galveston Pirate Festival, I take tremendous pride in what we accomplished together. There were countless hours of planning, coordinating, creating, promoting, problem-solving, and preparing but when I looked around and saw our community celebrating together, I knew it was all worth it.

This festival belongs to every person who supported it.

Whether you sponsored the event, bought a ticket, volunteered, performed, set up a booth, hosted an activity, shared a post, told a friend, traveled to Galveston, or cheered us on from the sidelines you helped make this success possible.

Thank you for believing in the Galveston Pirate Festival. Thank you for supporting local events. Thank you for helping us grow. And thank you for giving me the opportunity to create something that brings so much joy, energy, and excitement to the island I love.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you for making this year unforgettable. We made Galveston Pirate Festival Week bigger and better than ever and this is only the beginning.

With sincere gratitude,

Johnny Steverson

Between 1817 and 1820, Jean Lafitte ran a pirate colony on Galveston Island that he called Campeachy. At its height, the operation included a fleet of up to a thousand men, a fortified headquarters he called Maison Rouge, and a brisk business in privateering and smuggling that made Lafitte one of the wealthiest and most wanted men in the Gulf. He had already made himself famous during the Battle of New Orleans in 1815, fighting alongside Andrew Jackson in exchange for a pardon. Galveston was his next chapter. ๐Ÿดโ€โ˜ ๏ธ

The United States government tolerated Campeachy for a few years before growing tired of the diplomatic complications it created. In 1820, a U.S. naval vessel arrived with orders for Lafitte to leave. According to multiple accounts from the time, before he departed he set fire to Maison Rouge himself, loaded his ships with whatever could be carried, and sailed south. What he did not take with him, or could not, is the source of a legend that has outlasted every other detail of his time in Texas.

Treasure hunters have worked Galveston Island and the surrounding waters for two hundred years looking for buried Lafitte gold. The problem is that the island has been so dramatically rearranged by hurricanes, development, and coastal erosion since 1820 that most of the original shoreline is now underwater or buried under fill. Serious historians have never confirmed that a significant treasure cache exists. That confirmation gap is, of course, exactly what keeps people looking. Whatever Lafitte left behind on Galveston Island, if anything, is either gone or deeper than anyone has gotten so far. ๐ŸŒŠ
