The NRRHoF is fortunate to be associated with a vital national network of railroad experts whose talents guide and inform our programming and development. One such organization is the Lexington Group for Transportation History, whose august members include historians, academicians, authors, and rail executives. NRRHoF Director Julie King serves on the Lexington Group’s board of directors which met recently at Steamtown National Historic Site in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

Slide 1: Board members were treated to a tour of Steamtown’s extensive rolling stock collection. Pictured in front of Nickel Plate Road No. 190, a rare 1948 ALCO PA-1 diesel locomotive, are Treasurer Roy Wullich, Secretary Julie King, Webmaster Chuck Weinstock, Director Bon French, and President Al Churella.

Slide 4: The weekend included an excursion on the Railroad Explorer VI, a rare-mileage charter on former anthracite coal branches aboard a three-car Reading & Northern Budd Co. Rail Diesel Car train. The consist is shown stopping at Ryan’s Cut, a daylighted tunnel originally dug in 1853 on the former Reading’s Catawissa Branch north of Hometown, Pennsylvania. Photo by Bon French.

Slide 5: Board members enjoyed their stay at the elegant Radisson Lackawanna Station Hotel. This historic structure was built in 1908 by the Delaware, Lackawanna, and Western Railroad as a train station and office building. Photo by Al Churella.

What a pleasure it was to see Matt Solari (center) and Anthony Onibon (not pictured), exhibit designers with BRC Imagination Arts of Burbank, California. The pair are crafting the visitor experience for the NRRHoF. They stopped in Galesburg recently to view the building site on Seminary Street, enjoy dinner with us at The Landmark, and discuss next steps in our creative collaboration. This Academy award-nominated firm are masters at distilling the essence of our human stories and bringing them to life in magical, interactive, compelling experiences. What an honor to have them partnering with us as we celebrate the people of American railroading!

A big thank you to NS for hosting the reception for our March 12th induction ceremony aboard these beautiful business cars. Guests enjoyed laughter and conversation as we gathered to celebrate the achievements and contributions of David R. Goode, D. William Brosnan, and James W. What a great day we had at the historic Hotel Roanoke last Thursday honoring three Norfolk Southern leaders with induction into the National Railroad Hall of Fame: D. William Brosnan, President of the Southern Railway System (posthumous); James W. McClellan, Sr. VP Planning, NS (posthumous); and David R. Goode, former NS Chairman, President, and CEO. We were delighted to have Mike Haverty on hand to present the medallions. Haverty is former Chairman, President and CEO of Kansas City Southern and a Hall of Fame inductee in his own right.

A reception was held on the NS business train and at the O. Winston Link museum before the ceremony, and guests and honorees enjoyed dinner and conversation following.

Hein Construction has been chosen as the general contractor to oversee building of the new National Railroad Hall of Fame visitor attraction in Galesburg, Illinois. Hein was the unanimous choice of our board. Their selection represents a milestone in the life of the project, and we look forward to groundbreaking in the coming weeks.
