When you get a call from a good friend's son... a good friend who wasn't in the best of health, but who seemed to be strong enough to survive forever... sometimes you just *know* the news won't be good.
Two days after Thanksgiving, John Spaulding King passed.
Strong of will, and opinion and rich with charm, he was always a favorite and frequent client at Nor'east Frameworks.
Sofrequent, that our acquaintance became a good friendship.
He would invite me to get together with him (often with many others) for a dinner gathering, an ice cream social (yes, he had one EVERY year) or a movie at his house.
He even invited us for the decorating of his elaborate and extraordinary Christmas trees.
He'd sit (rather King-like) and direct the decorating. Not at all demanding, but just unwilling to climb a ladder to place bulbs on the 15-foot tall pines. There'd be wine (and cool, unusual sodas for the kids), really good food, and a cast of characters to make the whole thing perfectly, outrageously entertaining.
He had superb taste, and collected and restored incredible antiques... he once told my wife to be careful with her glass of red wine as she sat on a silk-upholstered chair, and we still mimic his Brahmin utterance... "Please... Don't spill on the Scalamandré!".
He had amazing artwork he'd commissioned or just fell in love with. He proudly displayed a B&W portrait of himself shot by the illustrious photographer, Yousuf Karsh, and had a portrait of himself with his sons prominently hung in each of the homes he lived in.
He was good to those around him. VERY good, and generous of spirit, heart and coin.
He preferred to dine out, have others cook for him, or find a place with exquisitely prepared foods, to cooking for himself. His parties were filled with delicacies, brought in from the best places.
He preferred imported Scottish caramels and butterscotch candies to what one could get at the supermarket.
I gave him a bag of lemon candies I picked up for him in Amalfi, telling my wife, "This is JUST the kind of thing John King would love.
I once told him about a bakery in NYC where I had the most amazing hand-made doughnuts, and next thing you know, a box came to the shop FedEx overnight. He also got some for himself as well, and remarked that they were "heaven by the dozen".
He was tall, barrel-chested, spoke from the heart and the diaphragm. He had trained as a dancer, a violinist, an actor, a lawyer and an opera singer.
He was forever addicted to ni****ne, though hadn't smoked in decades. He'd come into the shop after visiting the Pharmacy next door, pop the cap, pump the inhaler bottle until it misted in the air, and take two "hits", one in each nostril.
I can almost smell that medicinal odor now, as I recall it.
He'd come in with quirky ideas, projects for me to do, even if they weren't exactly in my wheelhouse.
Book repairs.
Reverse glass painting touch-ups.
Gluing up a few broken teacups.
I'd say, "John... this isn't really what I *do*. There are people for this kind of thing."
"Charles," He always called me Charles. "You can do this. All you have to do is............"
Some I would do... some. The rest? I would find him JUST the right person to take the thing on. Maybe that was the intent all along. He'd always reimburse my time with a meal at some great, and usually pricey, place.
I always said he didn't *have* to do that.
But he'd insist. He liked experiences... and dining out.
And, he loved the company of those he found interesting.
He loved people who were good and passionate about something.
He loved art, and artists.
He loved craftsmanship.
He loved "the best!"
And he loved his sons, his family, and his friends.
AND, he'd tell you.
I last spoke with him 3 weeks ago, when he said he was at Mass General, "In for a little procedure."
Heart surgery... "little" procedure.
We ended that call with a "Well John... Good luck with your procedure. I hope it all goes smoothly. I will be back up in a few weeks... after the holidays. Let's get together then?
"That would be nice!"
"OK... it's a plan. Be well John...."
"I love you, Charles... love to Coleen... and a big hug for Chace!"
"Love you too, John!"
Love you too, John!

“The Paint Factory”
6 x 8”, oils on panel
Well, it took a little while, but this piece finally found its forever home!
Artist, Neal Hughes painted this gem, loaded with atmosphere and beautiful detail, a couple years back, on location out on Rocky Neck in Gloucester.
An iconic landmark on Gloucester Harbor, it has been painted countless times and continues to play muse to so many artists, as it has for nearly a century and a half.
Built in 1877, it was the place where copper-based anti-fouling bottom paint was first produced, and it changed the maritime game forever.
While it took some time, it was admired by many who visited our gallery, and we always knew it would find an owner… it’s just too damn sweet to not sell.
Congratulations Neal and to the new owners!

“Symphony in Grey”
oil on panel, 6 x 8”
By artist Kirk Larsen
The artist’s passion for waves and the sea are clear and evident from his body of work, and here in this small-but-powerful painting, Kirk again shows his keen eye for the mighty rush of water meeting the steadfast granite of the Cape Ann coast…
His muted palette suggests an overcast day, where that Cape Ann light is held at bay, but even still, he captures the essence of this kind of moment, seen oh so often when at the shore of this little rocky peninsula.
Framed by Nor’east Frameworks in a stacked frame, silver panel Roma Moulding with bead inside, and Larson-Juhl Brimfield white outer frame. The combo is reminiscent of a weathered old frame, but that bit of silver leaf elevates the look to a cool, vintage vibe… and never “steps on” the chilly, blue tones of the art.
Congratulations to the buyer… we hope they love it as much as we loved the collaboration with Kirk to get it to our gallery!

"Gloucester Harbor" (top left in photo) by Jay Brooks. 24 x 24" oils on panel
Jay's use of light is spectacular, in this painting, and pretty much always! But here, the raking light hits the front of the boat, casting strong shadow shapes, framed by the twin dock posts creating a frame around the vibrant green... Oh, and that orange float!
And that light on the water, the buildings in the distance, and on the fishing vessel... so perfectly crisp! And so, SO Gloucester!

Charlie Hunter-Studio - Antique Shops, Essex
6 x 12" Royal Talens Cobra oils on muslin-covered panel

When Charlie was here in 2019, participating in Cape Ann Plein Air, he had a plan to paint a lot of "coastal things". But once he got around and got lay of the landscape, he became quite enamored with Essex, doing a number of paintings of the downtown antique stores and Island Road.

Done in his signature monochromatic palette, this painting at once evokes feelings of nostalgia and history, as well as sepia-toned photography of days passed.

And it may be this familiar feeling that draws people to his work, astonished to find out that there is no photography involved, but rather pure drawing and artistic talent... and beyond marveling at the skill required to make such images, his audience and collectors gravitate to his work for its simplicity and beauty.

We are always amazed at the work he creates, and are thankful to be able to represent his work! THANK YOU, Charlie!!!

Nautical Chart #13217, Block Island.
This chart was framed for my living room a few years ago, but I now have two of these. Therefore, this one becomes available.
This is an original paper chart, not the bright, gaudy one they print now. Drymounted, protected with a UV filtering, non-glare acrylic, and framed with an *authentic* barnboard frame (complete with nail holes, knots and very open, weathered grain) painted in a beautiful coastal blue.
When I frame for myself, I always use the best materials I have access to. Your gain, in this case...

Regatta Staccato, by artist Kirk Larsen
oils on canvas covered panel - 12 x 16"
Specifically, he is fascinated by the push and pull where the ocean meets the land, especially the waves as they crash into the rocky shore of Rockport and Gloucester. we call home.
Specifically, Larsen is taken with the push and pull forces of where the ocean meets the land, and especially the waves as they crash into the rocky shores of Rockport and Gloucester.
The mounted canvas panel is 12x16”, and framed with an aluminum-skinned wooden frame in a beautiful gunmetal-tone, with a painted, white linen liner. The excitement in the canvas is a result of composition and masterful handling of the paints, done in an alla prima, direct painting technique.

What a special painting of a view we all know and love!

This piece is available through a gallery in PA with no affiliation to us. We simply saw it posted by the artist on her page and of course knew it immediately as our very own MbtS and we had to share it.

"Lucy"
by painter Jay Brooks
Oil on birch panel, 18x24"
Taken by the working ships of Gloucester, Jay's subject matter (when he makes his way to Cape Ann) tends to favor the weather, worn and worked vessels found at the fishing docks. Like Lucy, tied up in America's oldest working fishing port, .
A master of the plein air craft, Jay accurately depicts the rust and worn paint, but also the glorious light that the Cape is known for.
Come by the shop/gallery to take a look, or to take her home!

🔴 S O L D !
"The Endeavor" by artist, Elise Phillips
Oils on panel, 8 x 16", plus hand-crafted frame.
Painted on a blustery fall day, Phillips still manages to capture the warmth of that glowing golden sky over Gloucester Harbor.
And a swarm of gulls encircles the boat as the birds look for their next meal, following the fishing vessel as it passed a field of classic sailboats, into dock to unload its catch. This piece just screams Gloucester!
Elise has come to Cape Ann a few times to paint, and she knocks it out of the park EVERY single time, catching perfect scenes of the local life... boats, fishermen, marshes, etc... We LOVE her work!
A client bought this for their sister, who will now get to love it as well, every day! ❤️

Another painting, done "en plein air" by Monterey, CA artist Mark Farina, simply titled "Red Tractor", has found a home!
This small but beautiful 6 x 8" oil on linen-covered panel is wonderfully rich with deep autumn tones and that intense red punch (even if my photo doesn't do it justice).
Painted rapidly during the QuickDraw of October 2017, we've held onto this piece, showing it in a couple of exhibits, most recently in a Small Works show over the holidays.

Seasons' Change Sale of fine artworks... stay tuned! There will be some really wonderful work at equally wonderful prices!
All the work is done by artists who make their living from making art... passionate and talented professionals! Each one a rockstar in their own right!

A rainy Saturday here in New England is the perfect time to share a little something we've been cooking up.
Beginning Labor Day we will be offering something you will not want to miss!
Wonderfully reduced pricing on original paintings by nationally recognized artists.
Why are we doing this? It's simple...we love the arts and we love these artists. The past several months have been difficult on everyone and certainly on artists who earn their living by doing live events or having their work seen in galleries. Events have been canceled and galleries have been closed.
Not to mention, we've all been stuck in our houses for months and our guess is you've had a chance to look at your walls and maybe need something new to change up your space, elevate your mood, take you to a place you love.
So....we decided to collaborate with a group of about 25 artists who all love New England as much as we do. Most of them don't live here but have traveled here to paint the beautiful scenes that we all are fortunate enough to see in our daily lives.
Here is a TEENY peek at a few of the pieces we will have available for purchase for our Seasonal Special (Labor Day through Columbus Day).
These are original pieces...each will be posted with a title, medium, size, and price. Purchasing will be easy and details will follow. Keep your eyes on this page so you can add something really beautiful to your walls. You'll feel like you went on a little trip someplace special every time you see it hanging there. 🖼
