Looks like Gidley stopped by to see if Shryock's corn maze is ready yet! He heard it opens to the public in just 2 weeks! Speaking of corn… did you know that Callaway County farmers harvest between 3 million and 4.6 million bushels of corn for grain each year? That’s an impressive 16,000 to 26,000 acres of corn harvested annually! But corn is the second-largest crop in Callaway County, behind soybeans, our county’s primary cash crop.

Gidley is learning a lot as he travels around Callaway County! Where will he wander next? If you haven't pitched in to help Gidley on his journey yet, there's still time!

Looks like Gidley crossed over I-70! Hope he looked both ways before crossing!

Did you know that Wise Brothers is one of Callaway County’s Century Farms? In 1852, brothers Jim and John Wise purchased farms across a dirt road from each other, southwest of McCredie. Those farms are still owned by their heirs today!

Callaway County is full of stories like this—families who have worked the land for generations and whose history is still part of our community today.

Looks like Gidley has wandered all the way to Little Dixie Lake!

Did you know the Conservation Department acquired Little Dixie’s original 467 acres in 1957? Through the damming of Owl Creek, the 205-acre Little Dixie Lake was created. Since then, additional land was purchased and has expanded the area to 733 acres.

But there’s even more to Little Dixie! The Department constructed 22 ponds on the area for fisheries research, studying topics such as vegetation control, pond stocking rates, fish reproduction, and fish-rearing techniques. Both Department personnel and graduate students from the University of Missouri use the area for research.

Callaway County is an interesting place to explore!
