Independence Day marks the historic date in 1776 when the Declaration of Independence was approved by the Continental Congress. The declaration stated that the American colonies were no longer subject to British rule and declared their independence as the United States of America. Today, Americans celebrate their country's birthday with parades, fireworks, cookouts, and picnics. You can join in the festivities by stopping by the Frisco Heritage Museum’s visitor's center on July 1 from 1-3 p.m. where we will be hosting a festive craft activity.

Miller with his cane, John Northcutt behind the post, Romayne Haggard with a big hat (center), Mrs. Northcutt, leaning over, Mrs. Young with face hidden behind plank, and Mattie Acker with white dress.

You're invited to join us for a fun-filled celebration of Juneteenth at the Frisco Heritage Center on June 17! This family-friendly event will feature learning activities about this important national holiday, as well as a craft station where you can make your own Juneteenth friendship bracelets. So come on out and join the fun!β€οΈπŸ’›πŸ’š

Juneteenth, or Freedom Day, is the oldest national celebration of the ending of slavery in the United States. The holiday was first celebrated in Texas, where on June 19, 1865, in the aftermath of the Civil War, enslaved people were declared free under the terms of the 1862 Emancipation Proclamation. The day was first recognized as a federal holiday in 2021.

πŸ“Έ: Pictured here is Jim Peace, a former enslaved person, who arrived in Frisco with the Acker family c. 1880. Born c. 1868, Peace and his family lived on the Acker farm until they were able to purchase their own land in the Little Elm area. Peace died in 1955 and is buried at the Peace Holmes Family Cemetery in Denton.
