Come say hello! 👋 SJIMA is at the San Juan County Fair and we invite you to stop by our booth to see original artwork, chat with our team, and learn about what's coming up at the museum.

While you're at the fair, we'd love your support for Family Art Days, our free, year-round art program for children and families. This week SJIMA is part of the SJI Cares County Fair Giving Campaign, and every gift given now through Sunday at midnight goes towards funding our Family Art Days classes.

Now on view in the Sterner Atrium Gallery — Raven Skyriver's "Fluid Life: Glass Sculptures Inspired by the Sea," including "Cuts Through the Water," a striking salmon shark created in collaboration with fellow glass artist Preston Singletary.

Skyriver, who grew up on Lopez Island in the San Juan Islands, shapes molten glass to capture the movement and fluidity of marine life — and the Atrium's two-story glass walls and natural light bring every piece to life throughout the day.

Visit this week: open Thursday through Monday, 11 AM–5 PM.

Most curators come to their subject from the outside. Meg Partridge is related to hers.

Her grandmother was Imogen Cunningham. Her grandfather was Roi Partridge. Her father was Rondal Partridge — three artists whose work hangs together for the first time in "Convergence & Divergence: The Family Aesthetic," now in our Nichols Gallery.

Meg sat down with SJIMA Trustee and Lead Docent Marney Reynolds to talk about how she built the show, and the small family stories behind the work: a woodshed darkroom, an apple box at the sink, a letter that crossed the Atlantic, and one instruction from Dorothea Lange that her father spent a lifetime answering — "Photograph changing California."

The light in the Sterner Atrium Gallery is doing exactly what it does best this summer. Raven Skyriver's glass sculptures — including this sea turtle, caught mid-glide — are now on view in "Fluid Life: Glass Sculptures Inspired by the Sea", through September 14.

Skyriver, who grew up on Lopez Island, shapes molten glass to capture the movement of marine life — the way a turtle or an orca moves through water. Seeing the work in the Atrium's two-story natural light is its own kind of experience.

Plan your visit this weekend: open Thursday and Friday, closed Saturday for the 4th of July, and open again Sunday and Monday.

Chris Maynard carves naturally shed bird feathers into intricate shadow box compositions — using surgical tools inherited from his father — and his work is on view now in SJIMA's North Gallery through September 14.
