Happy World Architecture Day! 🏛️✨

Do you remember when the Fresno Art Museum looked like this?

On February 28, 1960, the Fresno Art Museum (then known as the Fresno Arts Center) celebrated the grand dedication of its new Arts Center Building.
Before moving here, the center was housed on second-floor quarters over at 2016 Merced Street (on Fulton). This permanent home was a massive milestone, 15 years in the making and the culmination of the dreams and hard work of many dedicated community members!

Designed by renowned architect David H. Horn, the original $60,000 building was constructed on an acre of Fresno City property at 3033 Yale Avenue (now Radio Park), with costs split between the City and the Arts Center.

But did you know there was another local art legend involved? ✍️

While Horn was the primary architect, the preliminary permit drawings were executed by acclaimed Fresno artist, professor, and founding Art Center member Darwin Musselman.

That original mid-century structure was only 10,000 square feet, featuring just two galleries, a classroom, and a foyer. In an incredible twist of structural evolution, today's climate-controlled storage vaults, which house the permanent collection, were actually those original 1960 galleries where Musselman personally hung his own solo exhibitions!

The expansive cultural hub we see today didn’t fully take shape until major community-funded expansions rolled out between the 1970s and 2000. These projects more than doubled the footprint to over 27,000 square feet, adding the Bonner Auditorium, new main galleries, and a grand entry plaza, before concluding with the 14,000-square-foot outdoor Sculpture Garden in June 2000.

Talk about an amazing architectural journey! 🏗️🙌

💬 We want to hear from you: Did you know that the modern vault rooms used to be the main galleries?

Welcome to a world where science and dance intersect 🔬💃

We are proud to introduce this year's Distinguished Woman Artist, Donna Sternberg! Her contemporary company, Donna Sternberg and Dancers, uses modern dance to discover connections between science, art, and humankind.

Donna’s unique artistic vision proves that discovery and exploration are at the heart of her practice:
“I use science as a framework to give shape and structure to many of my artistic explorations… drawing parallels and metaphors between science and human behavior. I seek to… form a bridge between science and society through my artistic interpretations.”

Since its foundation in 1985, the company has analyzed complex ideas like:
Quantum mechanics & string theory 🌌
Plant biology & environmental themes 🌱
Race and gender issues in the scientific community 🧬

Her boundary-breaking work has also traveled the globe! In 2016, Donna Sternberg and Dancers collaborated with leeMundwiler architects to perform “Breathing with CHiLL” at the prestigious Venice Biennale.

✨Come celebrate Donna with us! ✨

Join us at this year's Annual Distinguished Woman Artist Luncheon to listen to her lecture and view her short film 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘝𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘦𝘹.
