My Raku workshop got moved from 8/29 to September but I’m still throwing pots with the special Raku clay. There’s more grit than I’m used to so it’s a little hard on my tender hands. 🤣

Raku pottery is from Japan where you pull pots out of a HOT kiln and put in a container and throw combustible materials on it to create unique effects that only Raku can make. You can use newspaper, shavings, hair, etc which catches fire to create the design.

In the end, these aren’t considered food safe so I’m making vases. I have a liquid quartz on order to hopefully seal the inside of the vases so they can be used.

Vases are a form I have struggled throwing however these don’t look too shabby.

Pottery - it’s a life long learning journey

Almost everyday, I’m learning something about pottery! The last few days I watched a tutorial from BuschKraft to carve the design on the outside of this bowl with his dragonfly tool. It is not perfect and there are things I will do different next time (like measure the first lines!).

Next up in the studio is to make some vessels for a Raku workshop at the end of August. What is Raku? All I know is that we take hot pots out of a kiln and cover it with combustible materials, like sawdust, horsehair, etc to create incredible surfaces on the pot. I’m excited to learn this process!

Carvings lately … I picked up a mushroom cookie cutter and went a little overboard with the spots. Let’s just call it the freckled mushroom, just like me!

These are all carved with an assortment of Diamond Care burr tools and BuschKraft Dragonfly and arc blades.

I’ve got 5 mugs ready to carve! One of the hardest parts of this process is not only figuring out what to carve but also, what color to underglaze. Here is a mug that came out of the bisque fire today 🤩

What color would you want? 🖤 🤍

I’ll be carving flowers for days. I’m getting ready for the 3rd Annual Fall Festival at Empower Med Spa on 10/3/26 - check it out!

Carvings lately … I am rebuilding snowflake inventory. My sister took 30 to sell in her cute boutique Inspired By Taramesha. In the studio, I’ve got 2 dozen flakes in different stages. I’ve done a few sgraffito-to-go snowflake kits for past workshop participants too!

Last year, I had fidget pebbles scattered through my display for pottery lovers and children to take. This year, there will be little sgraffito carvings. Spreading love cause love will always win.
