A Cicada's Story

Millions of cicadas emerge in a single night after spending 17 years living underground. Overnight, they will shed their outward shell in 60 minutes or less. As they emerge the cicadas will unfold their wings for the first time in their entire lifespan. We witnessed this magical sight on a summer night, and wanted to share this unique insects transformation. 😃

Dr, Veronica Womack, founder of the Black Farmers Network, heard about our story and requested an interview. Candace Dantes,(a.k.a Cowgirl Candace) a southern storyteller, blogger and feature writer for Black Farmers Network conducted the phone interview and on March 30th, she and professional photographer, Trarell Torrence, conducted a site visit and photo shoot. The article appeared on the Black Farmers Network and Southern Styles and Steeds sites under the title "All-Female Farming Family Unearths 1920's Tourism,Textile Goldmine". This was one of the most exciting events of This Old Farmhouse GA Inc. this season! Admittedly, it's often all work and little playtime for our team when we all get together. Not this time around. They were able to capture our farmhouse story through words and amazing pictures. The article was informative, very well-written and a joy to read. Thank you for sharing our story.

The Heard County Historical Society visited the farmhouse on April 19th. They currently operate two historical attractions, The Historic Jail and Gulf Oil museums. Both of them are located in the heart of Franklin, GA.

They toured the farmhouse and the grounds. At the conclusion of the guided tour, most completed the evaluation form which instructed them to rate key aspects of the tour. We are grateful for their suggestions and comments.

We really enjoyed their visit and look forward to their next visit with us!

We had the opportunity to acquire some reclaimed lumber, which we so badly needed to repair our old ruins on the farmhouse property. The loggers clearing the property were instructed to bulldozer all the buildings into a pile after they completed the removal of the timber. We asked if we could have the lumber from the barn. He was very pleased at what we planned to do with the lumber and he put us in touch with the owner. The owner enthusiastically informed us to take whatever we needed and warmly instructed us not interfere with the work of his loggers, We had 1 day and no experience in tearing down a barn, We informed The West GA Farmers Cooperative of the date we would be embarking on this endeavor and they put out the call for help to the other members. Because of their efforts we were able to acquire enough lumber to repair most of ruins. Thanks so much!!!

Herbert "Grandpa" Vernon, of Birmingham, Alabama, maintained and cultivated a garden most of his life. Each year during the holidays, he doled out "care packages" of frozen vegetables from the garden. Each of his five children's families received enough vegetables, jams, and preserves to significantly reduce their grocery budgets. The gift was a lifesaver for young struggling families just beginning their careers. The packages were prepared with Patience, pride, and love. Herbert continued this tradition until his death.

Our garden, proudly named "Herbert's Garden" and its contents were inspired by Herbert's love of family. We maintain the same level of patience, pride, and love in producing our vegetables that Herbert had in preparing each of his care packages. Our garden contains both hybrid and heirloom vegetables. We do not use chemical fertilizers or chemical pesticides in our garden.
