Liberty Hall Historic Site is a four-acre educational center that was the home of the Browns, one of Kentucky's most important families. The site contains two houses: Liberty Hall (1796) built by John Brown, one of Kentucky's first United States Senators and the Orlando Brown House (1835), designed by Gideon Shryock, and owned by Senator Brown's second son. Liberty Hall Historic Site grounds include extensive boxwood and perennial gardens, which lead down to the Kentucky River. There is no charge to visit the Liberty Hall gardens. They are open to the public from dawn to dusk.

Happy Indigenous Peoples Day! To celebrate check out these cool bandolier bags in Liberty Hall’s collection.

These two bags were likely made in the late 19th or early 20th century by a Menominee or Potawatomi artisan. They are loom beaded with glass seed beads and feature intricate repeating motifs.

Bandolier bags are common amongst the Indigenous peoples of the Great Lakes Region. Historically these bags have been traded and worn as regalia. But in the face of western assimilation, bandolier bags were a form of resistance, frequently worn over western dress to express Indigenous heritage.

Because of their beauty and cultural significance, Euro-Americans often purchased bandolier bags for themselves. While we don’t know exactly how these bags arrived in our collection, we believe that they were purchased by Mason Preston Brown (1873-1941) on an annual fishing trip to Lac Courte Oreilles in Wisconsin.

Announcing our next book club pick: Let Us Descend by Jeanine Ward!

The publisher describes Let Us Descend as “a journey from the rice fields of the Carolinas to the slave markets of New Orleans and into the fearsome heart of a Louisiana sugar plantation. A journey that is as beautifully rendered as it is heart wrenching, the novel is “[t]he literary equivalent of an open wound from which poetry pours” (NPR).

Annis, sold south by the white enslaver who fathered her, is the reader’s guide. As she struggles through the miles-long march, Annis turns inward, seeking comfort from memories of her mother and stories of her African warrior grandmother. Throughout, she opens herself to a world beyond this world, one teeming with spirits: of earth and water, of myth and history; spirits who nurture and give, and those who manipulate and take. While Annis leads readers through the descent, hers is ultimately a story of rebirth and reclamation.”
