Our very own South Suburban Civil War Round Table member Dennis Doyle was recently invited as a guest speaker to the upcoming Abraham Lincoln Association Symposium!
His topic is "Lincoln and the Irish" and the symposium will be held at the wonderful Cantigny Military Park in Wheaton, Illinois on Saturday June 20, 2026.
Our keynote speaker is Michael Burlingham-who was awarded the prestigious 2010 Lincoln Prize.
Come visit the Museum and our Symposium for a great day of discussing history and Lincoln-registration information will be available soon.

A great person and historian Lance Herdegen has recently passed away. He was an expert on the Iron Brigade and he last spoke to our Round Table in the fall of 2016. We will miss him.

It's with sadness that we have to report on the passing of Civil War author Lance Herdegen. Lance was an award winning journalist and wrote many books on the Civil War, with many focused on the men of the Iron Brigade.

SSCWRT Member Dennis Doyle will be presenting Friday February 13, 2026 at the Kenosha Civil War Museum on "Irish Americans during the American Civil War".

Coming up this Friday, join us for our free program, "Irish Americans During the American Civil War" starting at 12pm, presented by Mr. Dennis Doyle.

Starting during the Irish Famine of the 1840’s, millions of Irish citizens immigrated to the United States to escape British Unionist political rule and economic poverty. Despite their lack of wealth and education, low social status, and discrimination, Irish-Americans distinguished themselves in their new home and during the American Civil War.

As many as 145,000 volunteered to serve in the Federal Army and over 40,000 would serve the Confederacy during the Civil War. These soldiers served on many battlefields and suffered heavy casualties. Seventy Irish-American Union soldiers received the Medal of Honor. Some of the outstanding Irish-American generals were notably Phil Sheridan for the North and Cleburne for the South.

Doyle’s program will focus on the motivation of Irish-Americans to serve during the Civil War and whether their hopes for a better position and social status was realized in post Civil War America. He will also explore how some Irish immigrants hoped to participate in a post-war uprising to liberate Ireland from British rule, which was not realized until 1922 when a Democratic Ireland was created.

If you are snowed in on Monday - very likely if you live east of the Mississippi - I will be doing a lecture for Shepherd University as part of their President's Lecture Series. The program will be on zoom and on the university's YouTube channel. It starts at 6:30 P.M. and will last about an hour. The title is "Can We Learn Anything from Antietam." Some more details are on the attached flyer, although note this flyer was prepared when we still were planning an in-person program on campus. Winter storm Fern has changed that. Hope some of you can join the program.
