While quite different in certain areas, this fine small work is obviously directly related to "Moonlight, on the Rocks". The setting, general overall feel and elements are all more or less the same. EEG had a life-long affair with the night sky, and never was very far from it.

This painting is a bit stronger in color than its larger cousin. The night sky is bent more toward the blues and teals. The moon is positioned differently, partially hidden behind the rocks and trees and lower in the night sky. The trees are more simplified, and there is the added hillside of forests at the lower right.

The major difference though is the very freely painted brush strokes. The background sky looks like it was painted with a broom, rather than a paintbrush. The trees have areas of color that were applied with almost careless freedom. Other details are done with such casual random strokes that they could have been applied blindfolded (don't wory, they weren't).

Overall, this is a fresh and spontaneous exercise in the simple pleasure of painting. Enjoy it for the pleasure, if nothing else... GBT

A bright night in the mountains... there is nothing like it on earth. I have spent many a night camping in the Rocky Mountains of Wyoming at 11,000 feet or more, when the sky was deeply dark, yet the whole earth was lit as bright as day from only the moon and stars. Such places, such nights have a way of becoming a part of one's soul in a way that cannot be explained. However, it can be felt in the work of EEG.

On a typical dark night, the thin air of high altitude gives the moon its way, yielding like a spent foe to the strength of its light. We don't see this at sea level. The atmosphere filters out the dynamics that are so clear in the mountains. The otherwise dull moon is crystal clear and bright, and lights up the landscape like its day to night creatures like us.

We have seen many moon paintings from the 19th and 20th centuries, but have never seen the dynamics so envisioned like those of the works of EEG.
