One of the most defining accessories of the 1940s were the nylon stockings. They were taken off the market during WWII, as nylon was reserved for war materials, but women found other ways to achieve a similar look. Some would paint their legs with makeup, drawing a line on the back of their legs to mimick the seam of a stocking, while others would purchase nylons on the black market. After the war, nylon stockings hit the mainstream market once again, recieving the same ecstatic reception the second time around!
