The Gordon Parks Museum To celebrate the life and work of Gordon Parks, internationally-known photographer, filmmaker, writer, musician and poet Parks.

The Gordon Parks Museum, since its establishment in 2004, has hosted speakers and artists from all over the United States and has featured programs throughout the year that have inspired and educated our students and community. The Museum serves as the organizing entity for educational and cultural programs and events that highlight the life, achievements and philosophies of Fort Scott’s native son Gordon Parks. The Museum is located in the Danny and Willa Ellis Family Fine Arts Center and contains memorabilia from Parks’ apartment, many of his collections, and 30 photographs donated by Mr. Gordon Parks, who died in March of 2006 at the age of 93, will be remembered for his photography, his films, books, poetry, and music. His legacy is far reaching, and he will be remembered as an icon and a pioneer. REGULAR HOURS are Mon-Fri: 9:00 am-4:00 pm. Please call ahead for a visit or to schedule a tour.

I had the great honor of attending the American Association for State and Local History (AASLH) Leadership in History Awards presentation during the organization’s annual conference that was held this year in Providence, Rhode Island, on September 18, 2026.

It was a privilege to accept the AASLH Award of Excellence for the Wayman Chapel AME Commemorative Church Park Project on behalf of the Gordon Parks Museum. The AASLH Leadership in History Awards are among the most prestigious recognitions for achievement in the preservation and interpretation of state and local history.

This award recognizes the importance of preserving Wayman Chapel’s history and honoring its legacy as a significant part of Fort Scott’s African American heritage and community history.

I was also honored to share a photo with another Kansas award recipient, Shawnee Town 1929, celebrating the outstanding work being done to preserve and share Kansas history.

It was a memorable experience to represent the Gordon Parks Museum, Fort Scott Community College, and our community on a national stage. I’m proud of the collaborative efforts that made the Wayman Chapel AME Commemorative Church Park Project possible and grateful to everyone who helped bring this meaningful project to life.
