🌟 Congratulations to our 2026 Discovery Award Outstanding School Award Second-Place Recipients! 🌟

The Lowell Milken Center for Unsung Heroes is proud to recognize Newton High School in Newton, Kansas, and Benjamin Franklin High School in New Orleans, Louisiana, for tying for Second Place in the 2026 Discovery Award Outstanding School competition!

Both schools demonstrated a strong commitment to the Discovery Award program, with students submitting outstanding projects that highlighted the stories and lasting impact of Unsung Heroes.

The quality of these projects reflects the hard work and dedication of the students, along with the guidance of their teachers, Brian Skinner and Kynda Faythe of Newton High School, and Chris Dier of Benjamin Franklin High School. 🎨 Congratulations to 2026 LMC Fellow Johnna Stoffregen! 🎨

We are excited to celebrate Johnna Stoffregen, art teacher at Andover Middle School in Andover, Kansas, on being named the recipient of the 2026 Arts Educator Award by the Wichita Area Arts Council!

This prestigious award recognizes an individual who has dedicated their career to teaching the arts and making a lasting impact through arts education.

Johnna is one of just 11 honorees being recognized this year for outstanding achievements and contributions to the Wichita arts community. She will be honored during the Arts Awards celebration on November 14.

🌟 Congratulations to our 2026 Discovery Award Outstanding Educator Award Recipient! 🌟

Aaron Kruger of Central High School in Cheyenne, Wyoming, has been named the 2026 Discovery Award Outstanding Educator!

Aaron’s commitment to helping students discover and share the stories of Unsung Heroes was reflected throughout this year’s competition. His students submitted numerous projects, with three earning Semi-Finalist recognition, two advancing to Finalist recognition, and one student earning the 2026 Grand Prize.

Through his guidance and encouragement, Aaron has empowered his students to conduct meaningful research, think deeply about history, and bring important Unsung Hero stories to life.

Experience Life in a Jar: The Irena Sendler Project

One Kansas classroom project changed the way the world remembers Irena Sendler.

Life in a Jar: The Irena Sendler Project tells the remarkable story of the students who helped bring international attention to Sendler and her courageous work rescuing Jewish children from the Warsaw Ghetto during the Holocaust.

At the Lowell Milken Center for Unsung Heroes, Executive Director Norm Conard and Program Director Megan Felt share this powerful story through a special presentation exploring Irena Sendler’s heroism, the students’ extraordinary journey of discovery, and the worldwide impact of their project.

🌟 Congratulations to our 2026 Discovery Award Certificate of Excellence Recipients! 🌟
Among the eight Certificate of Excellence Awards presented this year, one was awarded to Saketh Chatrathi, Viraj Devgun, and Shruti Sundar, sixth-grade students from Charles B. Pearson Middle School, Frisco, Texas, for their website “The Uncelebrated Miracle Medicines Alien”, about Dr. Yellapragada Subbarow.
The project, supervised by teacher Christopher Barker, highlights the inspiring work of Dr. Yellapragada Subbarow, a pioneering scientist whose discoveries helped transform modern medicine.
