For nearly 90 years, the Fort Recovery Museum has helped a small Ohio community share a story of national significance.

Constructed by the Works Progress Administration between 1936 and 1938, the building originally served as both a public library and museum. Its stone façade, beautiful woodwork, beamed ceiling, porch, and surrounding landscape reflect the craftsmanship of the WPA era and the determination of local residents who helped make the project possible.

The Museum stands on the site of two pivotal events in American history: St. Clair’s Defeat in 1791 and the Battle of Fort Recovery in 1794. These Northwest Indian War battles ultimately helped shape events leading to the Treaty of Greenville and the settlement of Ohio. Today, the Museum interprets these complex stories, including the Native perspective of St. Clair’s Defeat, on a battlefield site listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

After the library moved to a new location in 1968, the entire building became the Fort Recovery Museum. Today, it is an Ohio History Connection site managed by the Fort Recovery Historical Society, offering exhibits, battlefield tours, school field trips, speakers, outdoor interpretation, and community events.

In a community of approximately 1,400 people, support for the Museum is anything but passive. Local residents contribute more than 1,000 volunteer hours each year to help preserve the building, care for the site, conduct research, lead tours, and welcome visitors from across the country and beyond.

The Fort Recovery Museum demonstrates how a historic building can become part of a community’s identity while helping new generations understand events that shaped Ohio and the nation.

You still have time to catch a one-hour guided battlefield tour this season! As part of Beyond the Battlefield: Native Days on Saturday October 24, we will have battlefield tours at 11:00, 1:00, and 3:00, at the Fort Recovery Museum. The Native cultural activities with 15 Tribal citizens from the Wyandotte Nation Cultural Center and Museum, Eastern Shawnee Cultural Preservation Department, and Miami Nation News & Events will be from 10:00-4:00 at the Fort Recovery Elementary/School. All events are free!

Reminder, we will have two venues for Beyond the Battlefield: Native Days on October 24. All Native cultural events will be at the Fort Recovery Elementary/Middle School at 865 Sharpsburg Road. The Fort Recovery Museum (1 Fort Site Street) will be open free of charge with free battlefield tours and an information table from The Filson Historical Society. Both venues, 10:00-4:00. Guided outdoor battlefield tours (1 hour) are scheduled the 2nd Sunday of the month May through October at 12:00 and 3:00. Tour included with Museum admission.
