Hey Everyone! This year we are planning something new and special for the town of Fort Recovery, a Community Potluck and Firework Show! All over the nation, small communities are getting together to have potlucks.

This July 5th, join us for a night of Food, Fun and Fireworks as we bring the community together to celebrate 250 years of American greatness.
So this July 5th, lets bring together our food and fireworks and have a BLAST 💥🇺🇸🎉
We are currently looking for people who would like to join us for planning, volunteering, or donating to the event. The more help we have, the more fun things we can plan.

Zac Distel , Curator & Director of Collections at The Sons of the Revolution in Louisville Kentucky , presented at the Fort Recovery Museum on Sunday .

I must confess that I initially was uncertain about my interest in our extensive Charlesville Musket collection .
Zac came several months ago to examine our musket artifacts and his enthusiasm and expertise in the area of weaponry was contagious !
The wealth of knowledge he brought will help deepen our understanding of St Clair’s Defeat as well as the Battle of Fort Recovery .

A few interesting facts about the Charlesville musket .

1 . The weight was initially 11 lbs and later pared down to 9 lbs. 2 pounds is huge when carrying a weapon for weeks on end !

2. There were 8 different models made in 23 years. They were not standardized or interchangeable.

3. Each model could have different bayonets so they didn’t attach to every musket .

4. Gunpowder could be poor back then . It did not travel well . If it got damp at all it could be ruined .

5.The soldiers didn’t make that many paper cartridges in preparation for battle . So fighting progressed to hand to hand combat fairly quickly .

6. The Charleville was fairly fragile. If they were thrown on the ground or banged against something they may not work properly.

7. Several of our charleville musket pieces are unique because they were literally left behind on the battlefield.

8. According to army records over 1200 Charleville muskets were thrown down when they retreated to Fort Jefferson during St Clair’s Defeat.

Fort Recovery 3rd graders came for their annual visit to the Museum today !
I remember when I made the treck uptown from the West school for my 3rd grade trip ! It seemed like a really long walk ! 😂
These kids were fantastic as usual . They were polite and asked good questions !
