Someone paid $40 for this Harold Newton painting at a sale in St. Louis. This week on Antiques Roadshow, it was appraised at $10,000 – $15,000.
The Florida Highwaymen were 26 African American artists from Fort Pierce, FL who painted Florida’s landscapes and sold them roadside in the 1950s-70s. For many, it was paint or pick citrus. They chose to create.
Today their work is called “The Last Great Art Movement of 20th Century America” — and the world is finally catching up.
Come see their story where it all began.
