For so many of us, the Florida Highwaymen and their paintings hold memories of an Old Florida—the landscapes we remember, the people we knew, and places that may no longer look quite the same.

We love to give back—especially when it means investing in the next generation of artists!

Did you know that many of the original Florida Highwaymen attended Lincoln Park Academy? The school holds a special place in Highwaymen history. It was there that art teacher Zanobia Jefferson taught several future Highwaymen and recognized the extraordinary talent of a young Alfred Hair, ultimately introducing him to renowned Fort Pierce landscape artist A.E. “Bean” Backus.

That history made one part of our recent Gallery Naming & Dedication Ceremony especially meaningful.

The Fort Pierce Yacht Club donated $500 to the Lincoln Park Academy Art Department, joined by an additional $500 gift from the Original Florida Hall of Fame Highwaymen, Inc.—a total of $1,000 supporting art education and the next generation of young creatives at LPA.

And in a beautiful full-circle moment, the Museum also celebrated the naming of the Zanobia Jefferson Gallery, made possible by a $5,000 gift from the Fort Pierce Yacht Club Foundation in her memory.

From the classrooms that helped nurture the Highwaymen to the young artists creating today, the legacy continues.

Thank you to everyone helping us preserve this history—and helping a new generation make some of their own.

We love to give back! ✨

To celebrate the new exhibition, now open Wednesday-Sunday 12-4PM, our community came together for a Gallery Naming & Dedication Ceremony celebrating generosity, education, and the people whose legacies continue to shape Fort Pierce.

We were honored to celebrate $11,000 in gifts, including two $500 donations to the Lincoln Park Academy Art Department—one from the Fort Pierce Yacht Club and one from the Original Florida Hall of Fame Highwaymen, Inc. 🎨

The connection is especially meaningful. Lincoln Park Academy holds an important place in Highwaymen history. Established in 1923 to serve African American students in Fort Pierce, the school later nurtured several artists who would become members of the Original Florida Highwaymen. Art teacher Zanobia Jefferson recognized and encouraged the talent of young students, including Alfred Hair.

We also celebrated two extraordinary $5,000 gifts: from the Fort Pierce Yacht Club Foundation, establishing the Zanobia Jefferson Gallery in her memory, and from Steve and Robynn Holland, establishing the John & Doretha Truesdell Gallery in memory and honor of John & Doretha Hair Truesdell.

From honoring those who paved the way to investing in the young artists who will carry creativity forward, it was a beautiful reminder of what this Museum is all about: legacy, community, and the future.

This Monday, community leaders, families, friends, and supporters gathered at the Museum for our Gallery Naming & Dedication Ceremony, celebrating generosity, service, and the individuals whose legacies continue to shape Fort Pierce.

It was a meaningful way to begin an exciting week at the Museum as we prepare to open our new exhibition this Wednesday, September 16, from 12–4 PM, along with our new expanded hours, Wednesday–Sunday from 12–4 PM.

We are deeply grateful for the gifts celebrated:

✨ $5,000 from the Fort Pierce Yacht Club Foundation in memory of Zanobia Jefferson, establishing the Zanobia Jefferson Gallery and honoring her lifelong commitment to education, youth empowerment, and community service.

✨ $5,000 from Steve and Robynn Holland in memory and honor of John & Doretha Hair Truesdell, establishing the John & Doretha Truesdell Gallery and recognizing their enduring legacy of faith, leadership, and community stewardship.

🎨 $500 from the Fort Pierce Yacht Club to the Lincoln Park Academy Art Department, supporting the next generation of young artists.

🎨 $500 from the Original Florida Hall of Fame Highwaymen, Inc. to the Lincoln Park Academy Art Department, further supporting arts education and opportunities for young creatives in our community.

Together, these gifts represent $11,000 invested in legacy, education, the arts, and the future of our community.

A special thank you to the City of Fort Pierce and Mayor Linda Hudson for their continued support of the Museum, and to everyone who joined us for this meaningful celebration.

These gallery names will become a permanent part of the Museum, preserving the stories and legacies of those who have made a lasting impact on Fort Pierce.

Yesterday, we celebrated Volunteer Appreciation Day at the City of Fort Pierce Florida Highwaymen Museum. We have incredible volunteers who give their time, passion, and heart to our Museum and our Community! We thank you.

We are so excited for the opening of the new exhibition, coming Wednesday, September 16th, from 12-4PM! From then on, our new hours will be Wednesdays-Sundays 12-4PM.

More wonderful enhancements are taking root in the Highwaymen Museum’s garden!

A heartfelt thank you to Deejay Gardner, Joseph Hayek, and Rob Gardner for generously donating and installing beautiful staghorn ferns and bromeliads in the magnificent oak tree that anchors our paver garden.

These thoughtful additions bring even more of Florida’s natural beauty to the Museum grounds, creating an inviting space for visitors to enjoy before and after exploring the inspiring story of the 26 original Florida Highwaymen.

Every act of generosity—whether through volunteering, donating, planting, or purchasing a commemorative brick—helps our Museum continue to grow and flourish.
