The Greater Fort Kent Area Chamber of Commerce is excited to present "Be a Tourist in Your Town" in conjunction with the Fort Kent International Muskie Derby Weekend.
The celebration begins Thursday evening at the Acadian Archives / Archives acadiennes - UMFK where visitors can explore the rich Acadian history and culture that has shaped our region for generations.
Have you visited America's First Mile Monument lately? Located at the northern terminus of U.S. Route 1, this iconic landmark marks the symbolic beginning of one of America's most famous highways and has become a favorite stop for travelers from across the country.
Just a short walk away is the Fort Kent Blockhouse, one of Maine's most significant historic landmarks. Built in 1839 during the Aroostook War, it is the only surviving fortification from the conflict and is recognized as both a National Historic Landmark and a property listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
But the story doesn't end in Fort Kent.
Throughout the weekend, we invite you to explore the history, culture, and heritage found across the Greater Fort Kent Area. Visit museums, historic churches, heritage buildings, memorials, scenic landmarks, and local attractions in Allagash, Frenchville, St. Agatha, St. Francis, and our neighboring communities. Whether you're revisiting a favorite destination or discovering somewhere new, you'll find that every community has a story worth sharing.
On Sunday, be sure to visit the Daigle-Dube House, where the Fort Kent Historical Society will host an open house. They will be serving hot dogs, pulled pork sliders, coleslaw, and baked beans. Enjoy live entertainment by Les Chanteurs Acadiens while touring the museum's exhibits and celebrating the rich heritage of the St. John Valley.
Then, wrap up the weekend at the Fort Kent International Muskie Derby Awards Celebration at the S.W. Collins Weigh Station.
From 3:00 to 6:00 p.m., local musician Kyle Boucher will perform classic country favorites from the 1980s during a free community concert sponsored by the International Muskie Derby. Bring a lawn chair, gather with family and friends, and enjoy an afternoon of great music. No tickets are required, and Kyle will have a donation jar available for anyone who wishes to support his performance.
As our nation celebrates America's 250th anniversary and the Fort Kent Historical Society commemorates 100 years of preserving the history of our community, there has never been a better time to rediscover the places and stories that define the Greater Fort Kent Area.
