Don't forget - we're meeting tomorrow (Monday, Feb 2) at 6:30 PM downstairs at the library to discuss plans for the Blockhouse. Hope to see you there!

This year, our iconic Blockhouse will mark its 50th anniversary. Built as the Fort Fairfield Bicentennial Committee’s major project in 1976, the Blockhouse has stood for five decades as a symbol of our town’s history, identity, and enduring peace with our Canadian neighbors.

After 50 years of Maine weather, important exterior repairs are now needed to preserve the Blockhouse for future generations.

The Frontier Heritage Historical Society is beginning plans for a community fundraising effort and anniversary events, and we invite all interested community members to participate.

We found a few pictures from what appears to be the 1974 walkathon that helped raise funds to rebuild the Blockhouse - and it looks like at least half the high school took part!

A lot of the faces aren’t labeled, so we’re hoping the community can help.

Do you recognize anyone? Drop names in the comments!

Were you there? Share your memories of the event!

Let’s bring these images back to life as we work to preserve the Blockhouse for the next generation.

🛡️ Help Restore a Piece of Fort Fairfield History! 🛡️

Did you know our beloved Blockhouse - the iconic symbol of our community’s roots - is actually a historically accurate replica of the original structure that once stood guard over our border during the Aroostook “Bloodless” War?

The original Fort Fairfield blockhouse - built in the late 1830s from logs cut right here in town - protected the area during heightened tensions over the Maine/New Brunswick boundary. After it was no longer needed, the timber was converted into sawed lumber and the fort disappeared into history.

Fast-forward to 1976: our town rallied together during the Bicentennial to bring the Blockhouse back! A charity ball, countless fundraisers, and donations from community members and businesses made it possible to rebuild this landmark so that future generations could see Fort Fairfield’s past with their own eyes.

✨ 50 Years Later - It’s Our Turn to Preserve It ✨
This replica Blockhouse, which has become a symbol of Fort Fairfield itself, now needs approximately $20,000 in repairs (chinking and structural work), and we need your help to ensure it stands strong for the Semiquincentennial and the 2026 Maine Potato Blossom Festival.
