White River Valley Historical Society Keeping Ozark's History Alive Since 1961

Throughout the past 50 years, members of the Society have followed its’ mission to “preserve, protect, and promote” the cultural history of the region. Committees and volunteers work tirelessly with efforts to transcribe cemeteries, document historic sites and structures, offer exhibits and educational events, and make as many collection items available in the research library as possible.

The following list assembled by the late Elmo Ingenthron provides Taney County School Commissioners and County Superintendents in his book the Land of Taney published in 1967. Most often the office was located in the county courthouse.

The office of county school officials went away after consolidation of local school districts.

Elmo Ingenthron published this listing of Taney County students who enrolled at the Lead Hill Normal School for the spring term 1905.

The list appears in Ingenthron’s book the Land of Taney, in 1974.

Normal schools were historic institutions designed to train high school graduates to become teachers, usually through a two year certification program most often focusing on elementary education.

Shown in today’s post is a 1946 picture at Swan School in Taney County. Nellie Clark, teacher at the one room school is said to have had an abiding faith in God and country. By example she instilled a respect for both in her students.

In those days patriotism burned bright in family circles as well as classrooms.🇺🇸🇺🇸
