This summer, something a little different is happening across Genesee County.
It’s called the America 250 Passport Program—and it turns visiting places like the Flushing Area Historical Society into part of a larger experience.
Here’s how it works:
📍 Visit participating locations across the county
📖 Get your passbook stamped at each stop
🏆 Collect enough stamps and earn rewards
There are over a dozen locations involved—including museums, historic sites, and community spaces—and Flushing is part of it.
But here’s the real question:
👉 How many places around Genesee County have you never actually stepped inside?
This is a chance to change that.
📅 The program runs through September 30, so there’s plenty of time to explore.
💬 Are you planning to try it?
📍 And how many stops do you think you could hit?

We’ll be part of this program here in Flushing — so if you’re working on your passport, make sure to stop in and get your stamp.

This was taken in downtown Flushing… but there’s a lot about it that isn’t immediately obvious.
At first glance, it looks like an ordinary scene from long ago—but look closer.
The storefront…
The way the animal is displayed…
And especially the ribbon—something you don’t often see in photographs like this.
We know this was taken somewhere downtown, but the exact location isn’t clear.
Photos like this give a glimpse into how different everyday life and business once were here in Flushing—things that would look unusual to us now were simply part of the normal rhythm of town life.
📍 Does anyone recognize the building or location?
🎗️ Any idea what the ribbon might have been for?
💬 Have you heard family stories about businesses like this?
Your memories and knowledge help connect these images to real places and people—and help keep Flushing’s story alive.

A Piece of Flushing’s Story Comes Down
Today marks the end of a familiar chapter in Flushing’s landscape.
For decades, the “smiley” water tower stood as a recognizable and beloved landmark—something that made people smile, sparked conversations, and became part of our shared identity. In this time-lapse video, you’ll see the moment its frame is carefully removed, bringing that era to a close.
While the structure itself is coming down, the memories it created—and the place it holds in our community’s story—remain.
That’s where you come in.
We’d love to hear your stories. Do you have a memory of the water tower? A photo over the years? Maybe a moment tied to Waterworks Park or that unmistakable “smiley” view?
Please share your memories and photos in the comments or message them to us. Together, we can preserve this piece of Flushing’s history for future generations.
Take a moment to watch, reflect, and remember—and help us tell the full story.
Special things to Beth Roman president of Parks and Recreation for this video.

🇺🇸 Flushing Hometown Heroes Banner Program 🇺🇸

The Flushing Area Historical Society is proud to present the Flushing Hometown Heroes Banner Program, honoring local military veterans and first responders with strong ties to the Flushing area.

This program recognizes U.S. Armed Forces veterans as well as first responders, including law enforcement officers, firefighters, and emergency medical personnel, through commemorative banners displayed in public spaces throughout the city from Memorial Day through approximately Veterans Day.

The Flushing Hometown Heroes Banner Program is not a fundraiser. Its purpose is to honor service and sacrifice.

Contributions are used only to cover banner production, installation, and to help support the program.

💙 Participation options:
• Single‑sided banner: $60
• Double‑sided banner: $120
• $250 support donation – includes a double‑sided banner and helps offset overall program costs

This program is made possible with the support of the City of Flushing and Flushing Parks and Recreation, ensuring banners are displayed respectfully and prominently for the community to see.
