Backstreet Gallery authors, Pattie Brooks Anderson, Kathryn Damon-Dawson, Judy Fleagle and Karen Nichols, together with sculptor/poet Denise Diamond, have curated a show presenting some of their artwork along with their written words for an interesting featured show in September titled ""Whimsical Wise Words".

Kathryn Damon-Dawson is featured with her book, “Tundra Rhythms,” which is filled with true adventures with her husband, Rand, while exploring Alaska in their tail-dragger airplane.

Judy Fleagle is the nonfiction author of four regional books, four broad interest books, and her latest project—30 read-in-one-sitting, spiral-bound books for folks with short-term memory loss.

Pattie Brooks-Anderson weaves characters from her outstanding paintings into ecological adventures set in enchanting forests in her books—intended for children. She has also authored a novel intended for adults.

Karen D. Nichols is the author of 11 novels, two memoirs, two illustrated children’s books, and her latest book, “Then There Were Three.”

You’re invited to the reception on September 5, 3-5 p.m. Enjoy live music, wine, and refreshments, while meeting the featured authors and Denise and acquainting yourself with their books––fiction, nonfiction, and poetry.

"Whimsical Wise Words" is the theme for sculptor/poet Denise Diamond and four authors featured at Backstreet Gallery in September.

Inspired by the textures and shapes of driftwood, Denise explores the coast for small, unique pieces to create her hanging artwork. Her “Valhalla Ladders” incorporate beads. Some of her pieces show her collaboration with glass artist Joy Munshower and weaver Teresa Zook.

Denise also uses agates, shells, rocks, and miniatures in assemblages to tell a story. Let your whimsy decide what the story will be.

As a poet, Denise recently presented a workshop, “Poetry as Dialogue,” at the Oregon Poetry Association’s 70th Convention. Her poetry is combined with driftwood in some of her assemblages, as well as her “Meditation” pieces.

If you haven’t had the chance to stop by the Gallery recently, more of Cathleen Kohler’s pastels continue to be on view through the end of August!
Cathy uses soft pastels to make lovely, impressionist paintings of landscapes, animals, and still-lifes. Many of her paintings evoke a sense of serenity and calm through her use of blending and color.
As gorgeous as her paintings are on social media, they look even better in person - find them at Backstreet Gallery, 1421 Bay St in Florence, OR, and come enjoy the coastal summer weather while visiting!

Featured Artist this August at Backstreet Gallery: Tamarah Phillips!

Tamarah is a multitalented artist whose main body of work combines low relief sculptural elements into her paintings of ethereal women, flowers, or sea creatures. Her delicate rendering of her subjects contrasts beautifully with the moody blues and teals of her backgrounds, drawing the viewer into a world of mysticism and wonder.

Backstreet Gallery is so happy that Siuslaw Library is hosting our artists for the month of August. We have on display a wide variety of 2D and 3D art showcasing the wide variety of artists that are a part of our cooperative. Backstreet Gallery has a wonderful Featured Artist show in August exhibiting the works Tamarah Phillips, acrylic/oil painter, and Cathleen Kohler, pastel painter.

Tamarah Phillips’ extraordinary paintings of colorful florals, with unusual patterns, often surround an otherworldly, mysterious, beautiful woman. The unique color palette sets a sensual mood for her mystical scenes. All of her pieces have incredible, vivid colors and quite noticeable texturing.

“Each piece captures a moment in time, a snapshot of my inner growth and outer exploration. I craft a journey of self-expression, weaving the highs and lows of my life into vibrant narratives,” explains Tamarah. “Battling cancer has been a pivotal chapter in my life, teaching me to embrace fearlessness and seizing every opportunity. With each stroke of my brush, I celebrate life's victories and navigate its challenges, inspired by the transformative power of art.”

August at Backstreet Gallery celebrates two distinctive styles of artists, pastel artist Cathleen Kohler and acrylic/oil painter Tamarah Phillips.

Cathleen uses soft pastel strokes to achieve bold effects or a soft, serene aura. Texturing and layering of the colors draw the viewer into a tranquil scene. Her work is reminiscent of the Impressionists who have influenced her distinctive style. Her beautiful Giclee prints are also available.

Whether Cathleen’s pieces are mystical roads and rivers that lead to special places, a still life, charming animals, or interesting buildings, the visual result is quite special. She is a member of FRAA and Pastel Artists of Oregon (POA), where she has been juried in to many of their shows. Arts and crafts have always been a part of her life.

Enjoy Cathleen's work at Backstreet Gallery, 1421 Bay Street, Old Town, throughout the month of August. We are open 10 am to 6 pm.
