Free workshop Aug. 22-bring your photos and other memorabilia to MW Gallery as we explore the art of assemblage! Re-create and re-imagine your life's stories through embellished collages inspired by MWC artists who championed the medium like Betye Saar, Nick Cave, Howardena Pindell, Sam Middleton, Radcliffe Bailey, Whitefield Lovell,Deborah Grant (to name a few). Ending this Saturday, Aug. 22, "Voice and Visibility: 25 Years of the Mott-Warsh Collection" highlights the depth, influence, and critical acclaim of artists who have shaped American art. The Mott-Warsh Collection is widely recognized as one of the largest privately owned collections of art by artists of the African diaspora in the United States.

Don't miss your chance to experience works by iconic figures such as Romare Bearden, Jacob Lawrence, Betye Saar, Charles White, Alma Thomas, and Hale Woodruff, alongside leading contemporary voices including Kehinde Wiley, Titus Kaphar, Ebony G. Patterson, and Wangechi Mutu, among others. Together, these artists present compelling narratives that explore identity, history, culture, and representation.

MW Gallery will be closed for exhibit changeover August 23 - September 10. Stay tuned for details on the next show which will open on September 11, 2026!

Join us on the last day of MW Gallery's current exhibition to craft memory magic! Delve into the creative use of everyday objects, photographs, and multiple materials that, when put together, “assemble” an artwork. Focusing on using items that hold personal significance, the workshop will offer new ways to share your story and reimagine the memories captured in mementos from your past.

Inspired by contemporary artists from the Mott-Warsh Collection who have championed the medium of collage and assemblage, like Betye Saar, Howardena Pindell, Mel Edwards, Radcliffe Bailey, Nick Cave, Whitfield Lovell, Sam Middleton, and Deborah Grant. This program is presented in conjunction with the exhibit “Voice and Visibility: 25 Years of the Mott-Warsh Collection” at MW Gallery, which features artworks by some of those artists on view. The workshop is being held on the last day of the exhibit, August 22, 2026.

Participants are invited to bring physical or digital photos and other memorabilia from their lives to use in crafting embellished collages. The ability to print-out digital photos and to make copies of physical items will be available on-site, to keep your originals untouched if desired. This program is free and open to adults and children ages 12+ (children ages 5-11 welcome only with supervision). All art supplies will be provided, along with some generic items and photographs to use if you don’t want to bring your own. Participants can bring in their own art supplies if they’d like, but no liquid materials or glitter please.

So, grab your photo albums, scraps, souvenirs and let’s get assembling!

Don't miss the show! Last ARTWALK to see the current exhibit at MW Gallery. Join us for live music and more in downtown Flint, MI on August 14th. Keep in mind that this is also Back to the Bricks weekend, and while the streets may not be closed Friday, the areas around Saginaw St. will have higher traffic levels than usual.

Now in its final weeks, “Voice and Visibility: 25 Years of the Mott-Warsh Collection” showcases the depth, influence, and critical acclaim of artists who have shaped American art. Featuring works by Betye Saar, Romare Bearden, Bethany Collins, Satch Hoyt, Jennie C. Jones, Wifredo Lam, Ebony Patterson, Adrian Piper, John Wilson, Kehinde Wiley, Wangechi Mutu and more, this exhibition draws from more than 1,100 works in one of the nation’s largest privately owned collections of art by artists of the African diaspora.

The exhibit will be on view at MW Gallery (815 S. Saginaw St., Flint, MI 48502) through August 22, 2026. Gallery hours are Thursdays and Fridays, 11:00am – 6:00pm; Saturdays, 11:00am – 5:00pm; and the 2nd Friday of each month, 11:00am – 9:00pm, for Flint ARTWALK.
