NEW Collection Release!

The HCHS Archives team is pleased to release Collection No. 291, the Hildebrandt - Apgar Photograph Collection (1886-1928). This collection consists of over two hundred photographs of individuals from the Hildebrandt, Apgar, and related families from Hunterdon County and beyond. Most photographs are undated, but appear to have been taken in the late 19th century or early 20th century. Most of these photographs are studio portraits of individuals or couples, but others depict everyday life, family outings and get-togethers, and social events. This is a major collection - many of the photographs are identified as to name and date, and some of these folks are quite stylish!

HUNTERDON CITIZENS AFFECT WORLD EVENTS

In so many of our archival collections, it is clear that people who live in Hunterdon have had a profound effect on the rest of the world. This is obvious from our newest archives collection release, No. 296, the Edmund LaPort Collection. While it does not have much local significance, the collection highlights the travels and job duties of a gentleman who lived in Hunterdon but whose job benefited all around the globe.

The collection is a grouping of materials concerning Edmund A. Laport, a Hunterdon County resident and long-time employee of the Radio Corporation of America (RCA), where he served both as Director of Communications Engineering and as Chief Engineer of RCA International. The collection (ca. 1928 - 1972) consists of postcards and Christmas cards from countries he visited throughout his career, as well as photographs of a variety of radio and other electronic equipment; mostly from the 1940's and 1950's.

This collection would be of use to those interested in historical Christmas cards from around the world, and to those interested in radio and electronic equipment of the mid-20th century.

TEWKSBURY and the BARNET HALL ACADEMY is the focal point of our newest collection release!

The HCHS Archives is pleased to release a small but significant collection of photographs and other documents concerning the Barnet Hall Academy (Collection No. 295). This collection is comprised of photographs, manuscripts, and ephemera related to Barnet Hall Academy of New Germantown, later Oldwick NJ. The collection includes school photographs of the entire student body as well as items related to the reunions that took place in 1905 and for the school Centennial in 1907. Also included are newspaper clippings related to the school and samples of state school examinations. The items were collected by former Academy student Marion Waldron, and the collection will be of interest to those interested in the history of the building that now houses the Tewksbury Library as well as those researching family history of the area as several notable Hunterdon County names are represented.

You can view the collection inventory here: https://hunterdonhistory.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Collection-295-Archives-Detail-and-Container-List.pdf

NEW TINY COLLECTION ALERT

The HCHS Archives is pleased to present Collection No. 283: Collection of Photographs of Restoration of the James Marshall House (1968-1970). A collection of photographs and slides associated with the restoration of the James W. Marshall House in Lambertville, which took place between November of 1968 and August of 1970.

Who was James W. Marshall? He was born in 1810 in Hopewell, NJ, and then his family moved to Lambertville in 1816, living in the house that is the focal point of this collection. In 1834, he left Lambertville, and New Jersey, and moved to Indiana. This began a series of pursuits and career choices that led him from Indiana to Illinois, Missouri, Oregon, and eventually to California...

where he found himself constructing a sawmill in Coloma, Ca., in 1848 for a man named Sutter. During the construction process, he could not help but notice the little golden flakes of metal he kept discovering in the tail race. And the rest is history. Yes, that James Marshall - the discoverer of gold in California that caused the Gold Rush. Small world, isn't it?
