This photograph was taken in 1898 or 1899 to honor soldiers of past wars.

The newspaper caption reads:
"Flat Rock Memorial Day 1898 - This tableau shows Freddy Mathews representing the Spanish American War; Ben Rice, Civil War; Eddie Upham, Revolutionary War; Ada Upham Adams, Columbia. Mrs. E.W. Upham wrote from Birmingham, in part: 'Your editor is going to ask what year the picture was taken. I would guess 1898 or '99. I was born in 1886 and I imagine I was around 12 at the time. The Decoration Day exercises were always held at the G.A.R. Hall, as was fit and proper. As I recall it, it was a tableau. The group placed in position on a darkened state, the magnesium flares readied. The curtain was then raised, the flares ignited as we in the tableau held our positions and no doubt our breath. I question the 1898 date. That was the year of the Spanish American War. Of course it is possible that the wave of patriotism sweeping the country may have prompted the idea.'"

If you have visited the Munger General Store at our museum, you may have noticed this unique appliance. It is probably the object we get the most questions about!

It is a Helene Curtis Duchess Model professional hair curler. The photo in the inset shows how it was used.

The General Store building housed Lee’s Barber Shop at one time, so we have an area of the museum dedicated to the history of hair-dos.

*For more interesting history, be sure to join us at the museum tonight (5/21) at 7pm for a lecture about Tecumseh.

What was in the local news 103 years ago today? Here is one article from the Huron Valley Sentinel from May 18, 1923:

April Report of Flat Rock Readers

During April the library at Langs store circulated 208 books which was an increase of 45 over the circulation in April 1922. There are 251 registered readers of the library which shows that there are 22 more people registered as library users than at this time last year. Besides the changing collection of books at the store there is a collection in each grade room in the Flat Rock Union School and in the library room of the High School. The aim of the Wayne County Library is to make books easily accessible to the people of Flat Rock and the vicinity. Make known your special hobby or interest, there is a book about it.

-We wonder how this compares to the current number of books checked out and the number of library card holders at Flat Rock Public Library?

On this day in history: May 16, 1886

Mr. Munger bought some products for the General Store - pork and 60 pounds of lard.

While it may just be a simple receipt, it is also a beautiful document with all of the flourishes in the handwriting and the design of the text.
