Join us on Saturday, September 12th, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at the Fife History Museum. Members of our Board will judge apple pies baked using a commemorative recipe courtesy of the Washington Apple Commission.

Bring your freshly baked apple pie to the Fife History Museum by 1:00 PM on September 12th to enter. Judging begins promptly at 1:30 PM. While our board members taste test, take a tour of the museum! 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners will be announced at 2:00 PM. Afterwards, stick around to enjoy pie and coffee with us until 3:00 PM.

On this day in 1920, the 19th Amendment became law, giving women the right to vote across the United States. But women in Washington State won that right 10 year earlier, after many battles.

In 1883, the Washington Territorial Legislature passed woman’s suffrage, and Washington became one of the first places Black women could vote in the US. Four years later, however, a court ruled that the legislative act was invalid and overturned the law. Suffragists, labor organizers, and social reformers lobbied again to get the vote back the following year in 1888, only to have it taken away again by the territorial Supreme Court.
It wasn’t until 1909 that the Washington suffragists began a new campaign that emphasized wives, mothers, and sisters. Posters, cookbooks, and literature was distributed throughout the state. They influenced the men to vote for women’s suffrage, and enlisted the Washington State Grange, labor unions, and others for support.
In November of 1910, every county in Washington State voted to amend the Washington State Constitution with the women’s right to vote.

Did You Know?!

Though this 1899 San Francisco newspaper clipping makes the claim that our own Col. William Johnson Fife will run for Washington State governor upon his return to our state, nothing ever came of it.

Could it have been due to all of the accusations made by Col. Wholley, his counterpart in the Washington Regiment? One of the accusations was of conduct unbecoming of an officer for joining a "spread" (aka "large dinner") that was prepared by the captain of the ship they were on to Manila. Apparently, Lt. Col. Fife got a little "loud".

Regardless, the men in the Washington Volunteer that went to the Philippines under his command stood with Lt. Col. Fife through all of the drama. Col. Wholley was then forced to retire from the army after much controversy.

In honor of Washington State Museum Day, Fife History Museum will be open 9am - 4pm this Saturday, August 8th!

Come escape the heat and smoke while you learn about the Frank Albert family, or peruse our Century Ballroom exhibit. The Pat Reed School room is particularly cool this time of year. Read up on Don Paul or flip through Fife High School year books to find your old sweetheart or your mom's graduation photo.

Admission is always free!
