🕮 Follow‑Up to Our Library Poll

The results are in — and you all nailed it! The correct answer to our question “In what year did the Federalsburg Branch of the Caroline County Public Library open?” is 1974.

To celebrate the community’s engagement (and impressive local memory!), here’s a brief timeline of how our town’s library story unfolded:

🕮 Federalsburg Library Timeline
1932 — The Woman's Club of Federalsburg first opened a local community library, operating just one night a week with Mrs. Jefferson serving as the first librarian.

1962— Books from the Federalsburg Woman's Club Library contributed to the newly formed Caroline County Public Library in Denton.

1974 — The Federalsburg Branch of the Caroline County Public Library officially opened, becoming part of the countywide system and expanding access to books, programs, and services.

1979 — The Federalsburg Women’s Club donated their library building to Caroline County, marking the end of an era and the beginning of a new chapter in public library service.

Did you know Federalsburg sits on land once lived on and traveled by Native peoples? Today, October 12th, is Indigenous Peoples' Day. Join FHS as we take a closer look at our area's native people.

Just across the county line, the Nause‑Waiwash Band of Indians , descendants of the original Nanticoke and Choptank peoples , continue to preserve their history, culture, and traditions. Though the tribe is based in Dorchester County, they are truly our close neighbors. The Marshyhope River flows directly into the Nanticoke, meaning the same waterways that shaped their communities also shaped ours.

Archaeologists and historians agree it is very likely that Native Americans lived, hunted, fished, and gathered along the Marshyhope in what is now Federalsburg. These rivers were highways, food sources, and sacred places long before European settlement.

Today, the Nause‑Waiwash Band of Indians keeps that heritage alive through education, cultural preservation, community service, and stewardship of historic sites like Wesley Chapel and their long‑house chapel on corner of Greenbrier and Maple Dam Roads in Cambridge. Their mission, “Pride in preserving our history, enhancing our culture and maintaining our traditions through education”, echoes our own commitment to honoring the past.

As we celebrate Federalsburg’s history, we also honor the Native communities whose stories run through the same waters that run through our town.
