Angels travel on beams of light. And that was the reason for the explosion of Gothic stained glass church windows. But even more wonderful, all three Abrahamic Religions saw Light as the touch of God. Sanctified Light by which God's angels enter Church, Synagogue and Mosque. The rays of God's Light beam in through the windows to glorify worshipers. The angels descend on colored rays of light shining in through stained glass windows with the message of the divine. But more mysterious yet... this idea of angels' light comes from Neoplatonism before the birth of Jesus, Mohamad or even the Temple of Jerusalem. Gabrielle speaks through sacred light. So now for the question: How many photons can fit on the head of a pin? How many angels can dance on the head of a pin. A curious thing angels and photons, brilliance without any mass whatsoever, holy brilliance real but untouchable. Lux Sancta!

Ugly Churches denigrate the human spirit.

This groundbreaking article sparked the debate and set the terms for subsequent discussions regarding the future of authentic Catholic architecture, and first proposed a third way between the banality of modernist church architecture and the

Pure light like the Divine itself is invisible until it is humanized through worship. Ecclesiastic stained glass humanizes both light and the divine, like prayer.

Professor Moak's reference to theologian Pseudo-Dionysius here is wonderful! "Suger" the first architect to adopt stained glass in early 12th Century Gothic Architecture saw how light streaming through leaded distorting glass would be the ideal medium to glorify God. "[He] came across writings by Pseudo-Dionysius.. who equated radiant sunlight with the manifestation of God...." In Corinthians 13:12 Paul describes the glory of God while we live as seen through a distorting glass, "through a glass darkly." Pure divine light from Paul's Talmudic heritage is invisible and is only seen by the living when captured and so distorted through a piece of glass or crystal. Suger realized that leaded stained glass windows capture that light and glorifies it like no other architectural feature could. Hence, the Rose Window!

Nothing says sacred like stained glass.

We have been protecting stained glass windows with Lexan exclusively for over twenty years. Mount Pleasant Museum wisely chose to begin their restoration project by protecting their heirloom windows with Lexan prior to doing repairs. Lexan is wonderful; it is resistant to rocks, hail, and even bullets!

Protecting the beautiful and fragile stained glass windows are part of phase one in transforming the former Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church into a museum showcasing local black history.

I would personally love this job! Most interesting is the creator of these windows hid his name so well none can determine who made these windows over a century ago! Exciting investigation challenge. Stained glass artisans like bricklayers and steel workers rarely signed their pieces. Similar to true iconographers: the works glorify God and so go unsigned. Ah, but even some liturgical artists are vain, so the trained eye can often discover their hidden signatures anyway.

ATHENS—As the St. Joseph Church community leaves its century-old home on Prince Avenue, the parish’s treasures are moving too. Workers took out nearly two dozen neo-Gothic stained glass windows recently to preserve them until a new church is built on its Epps Bridge Parkway campus on the edge of Ath...

An example of kiln-fired glass painting. I painted a piece of cathedral glass on both sides to create the feeling of a wood cut. Nice wine label?

The Medium is the Message says Marshal Mcluhan. Which simply means we see the medium in the message. The flat screen television set becomes part of the show.

For this same reason there is a difference between traditional stained glass and contemporary architectural glass, between pieces glazed in silicone or copper foil and pieces glazed in traditional lead cames. A Holy sacrament served from a Dixie Cup is really quite different than a Eucharist from a Monstrance.

My thought for the day.

Trends in religious architecture have made a significant shift away from the aesthetics we associate with the sanctuaries of the 19th and 20th centuries. Many new houses of worship are foregoing ornate design and traditional liturgical architecture. This shift can be credited to a number of factors,...
