Rural Louisiana, Missouri residents reported seeing a Bigfoot-like creature as early as 1944 and 1945. Was this the Missouri Monster? The year 1972, however, marked the most well-known and well-documented sightings of Momo. That July, two young boys witnessed their beloved dog's lifeless body carried off by the creature, the fire chief saw Momo and formed a posse to conduct a search, and locals enjoying a picnic fled after hearing an unearthly howl only to see the monster eat their sandwiches. Other witnesses found hair and recorded footprints. These events and other encounters garnered national news coverage, inspired the local Dairy Queen to add a Momo-burger to the menu, a popular ride at Six Flags, and a 2019 docudrama film entitled Momo: The Missouri Monster.

Momo, or the Missouri Monster, is a cryptid, which is an animal or other entity not confirmed by science. Described as a monster similar to Bigfoot, witnesses recalled encountering a large creature, about seven feet tall, which walked on two legs. Its features included a head the size of a pumpkin, but no neck; an ape-like body covered in long, dark hair that obscured the face; red glowing eyes; a putrid odor; and a foot with three toes and a large heel. Many witnesses also remembered the frightening growls they heard and the quickness with which Momo moved across the landscape.
