December 29, 1954
On this day, one of the most recognizable sets of James Dean photographs, the “Torn Sweater” series was shot by Roy Schatt for LIFE magazine, and although they never ran in the magazine, they have become the best known and most popular shots of James Dean in the world. A colorized version was used on a U.S. postage stamp in 1996. These photos were taken in 1954, before “East of Eden,” before anyone had any idea what kind of iconography would soon be associated with Jimmy’s visage. As Roy Schatt himself remarked, “…He clicked, I clicked, and the photos clicked.  He now had quite a bit of photographic experience himself, and after a while I allowed him to direct some of the shots.  It was all pretty heady. At one point he commented, ‘Don’t you think I look like Michelangelo’s David?’”

In the fall of 1950, Jimmy landed the part of Malcolm (the elder son of King Duncan of Scotland) in UCLA’s production of “Macbeth.” The play was praised, but Jimmy’s performance was not. The theater arts newsletter, “The Spotlight,” said Jimmy as Malcolm had “failed to show any growth and would have made a hollow king.” However, Jimmy seemed oblivious to the criticism and was overjoyed with the experience.

Jimmy made the basketball team as a freshman at Santa Monica City College. His coach, Samuel Crumpacker, remembered him as a boy with bad eyesight who didn’t like to wear glasses and who had to develop an acute sense of balance to make up for it. “One day he came to practice late, looking confused and withdrawn. I pressed him for an explanation and the boy tearfully explained that he had failed a screen test at a local studio. At that time he wanted more than anything else to get into acting.” -Samuel Crumpacker (A rare pic of Jimmy with his SMCC basketball team. He is the first seated player on the left.)

Jimmy raced against legendary racer Ken Miles in the finals at the Palm Springs Road Races. Jimmy finished in third place, but Ken was disqualified on a technicality and Jimmy was bumped up to second place. Ken summed up Jimmy’s racing this way, “Jimmy wanted speed. He wanted his body to hurdle across the ground, the faster the better. Jimmy was a straightaway driver. His track was the shortest distance between here and there.”

December 13 and 14, 1950
On these days, Jimmy filmed his first television appearances for two commercials for Pepsi-Cola. The first was shot at a carousel in Griffith Park. The producers were impressed with Jimmy’s boy next door quality and asked him to come to the studio the next day. The second commercial was filmed on a sound stage. Jimmy slams his hand on a piano to get it to play a more modern tune and he, along with other teenagers, sing and dance. Interestingly, Nick Adams and Beverly Long who ended up being cast as gang members in “Rebel Without a Cause” were also in the commercial with Jimmy. You can watch the second commercial here: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=MQfikxbS4zE

Jimmy and Terry Moore attended the premiere of “Sabrina” together on September 22, 1954. Jimmy is scowling in all of the pics because it was a studio setup that he was not happy about having to participate in. Supposedly, when Jimmy got in the car he tried to make conversation with Terry, but she completely ignored him. However, once they were in front of the cameras she was all smiles, which Jimmy didn’t appreciate. If there was anything Jimmy couldn’t stomach it was phoniness.
