We mourn the loss of one of the most influential bicycle designers of the past century. Charlie Cunningham passed away early Tuesday morning, June 2, 2026. He was 77 years old.
Charlie Cunningham was born August 23, 1948 in Washington DC. His father was a WWII and Korean War fighter pilot and they lived in many towns across the country, eventually settling in Mill Valley, where Charlie graduated from Tamalpais High School in 1966.
As an aeronautical engineering student at UC Berkeley, Charlie learned the advantages of aluminum as a structural material. But building bike frames from aluminum was contrary to prevailing norms.
In 1979 a spaceship landed: CC PROTO, the first aluminum-framed mountain bike. It was radical. Large diameter tubes – a sloping top tube - wide spaced hubs – and a single chainring! Today, it’s the standard. Charlie knew what he was doing, and the world would just need to try to catch up.
Charlie understood the role of the bicycle in the world: the most efficient form of transport ever devised. In as much, Charlie found the bicycle worthy of his attention. On epic rides, he connected deeply with nature and refined his genius mind. Legendary trails, spoken of in whispered tones, carry on his legacy today.
Charlie cared deeply about all living beings and was very thoughtful of others. He was a true gentleman and philosopher.
In 1982 Charlie founded Wilderness Trail Bikes with Steve Potts and Mark Slate. Nearly instantly, WTB became one of the most respected and innovative companies in the industry.
Charlie and Jacquie Phelan married in 1988, at West Point Inn on Mt. Tamalpais. They lived in Fairfax, in “Off Hand Manor,” where Charlie had his extraordinary machine shop. Both Charlie and Jacquie became charter inductees of the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame that year.
Charlie left WTB in 2002, and continued designing and building bicycles. In 2015 he sustained a head injury that would profoundly alter his life.
A celebration of Charlie Cunningham’s life will be held at Marin Museum of Bicycling this summer, date to be determined.
