Did you know one of the earliest acts of rebellion leading up to the American Revolution happened in Portsmouth Harbor?

Months before the first battles of the Revolutionary War, New Hampshire patriots raided Fort William and Mary, seizing nearly 100 barrels of gunpowder. Some of it would later help arm American forces at the Battle of Bunker Hill.

If you've visited the Center, attended Festival, or participated in any of our other programs this summer, chances are you've met one or more of our intrepid interns. Curious, hardworking, and ready for anything, this crew has engaged in research and writing, survived school groups, staffed the Independence Festival, built marketing campaigns, and even learned how to give tours at the museum!

This summer, one of the interns here at the American Independence Center has been writing a series of essays exploring the experiences of women during the colonial period in New Hampshire.
