The Lost and Found Bookshop

I tend to unconsciously chose a theme when I'm picking novels. I'll read a book I like, then hunt for others with a similar motif. Lately I've been obsessed with books that are based around bookstores. I just finished The Lost and Found Bookshop. Literally, it's still sitting on my lap! It's about a young woman who I grew up in a family owned bookstore. The store has been in her family for several generations first as an apothecary, then a typewriter showroom with a printing press, and finally a bookshop.

Natalie was raised by her single mom and her grandfather and they all lived in the apartment above the shop. Her mom was wonderful, but seem a bit scattered and not too concerned about the massive debt the store is in. The store and the books are her life. Natalie, on the other hand wants order and stability. She went to college, got a degree and a job in a field that she doesn't like. But it's stable and secure. Then comes the unexpected tragedy. Her mom passes away and Natalie has to deal with the store and her grandfather who is showing signs of dementia.

Grandy (what an adorable name for a grandfather) refuses to sell, insisting there's treasure left in the store by his grandmother. The book dives into family history l, which is interesting on its own. Artifacts are found in the walls by a handsome contractor (whose 12 year old daughter's name is Dorothy Gale!). Add in a love triangle with a children's author and you will want to neglect the laundry in order to finish this book! Speaking of which, I need to put clothes in the dryer.....

WHEN WE HAD WINGS

The three authors, during Covid, pieced together the story of three nurses stationed in the Philippines during WWll in this historical fiction novel. Their tour starts in the beautiful tropics, light duty during the day and cocktails and dancing at the club most evenings. The good life takes a turn when the Japanese take over the island and the nurses end up as POW's. Now their days are filled with how to survive not only the hunger but the rath of the Japanese soldiers. The friendship of the three give each other strength and encouragement to see their captivity through till the end.

THAT BEING SAID, I FOUND THIS TO BE MOSTLY A BIOGRAPHY WITH THE LAST CHAPTER BEING THE CRIME WITHOUT THE THRILL. THERE WAS MORE CONJECTURE CONCERNING HER DEATH THAN ANSWERS AS FAR AS THIS
