Hi Dittmar Friends!

Make sure to check out our fall exhibit, "Stranger than Fiction: This is America," by artists Henry Sandifer and Nguyen Tran which is open and running until November 15th, 2020!

"Is the truth stranger than fiction? These emerging artists bring interesting perspectives to contemporary America. According to Artist Henry Sandifer, truth happens at different points for all of us with a moment of clarity. It’s a significant moment in being able to speak truth to power. The images in his work juxtaposed on canvas, tell truths via parables, allegories, suppositions, and facts that are stranger than fiction.

Artist Nguyen Tran tells stories about the life he experiences around him, what he sees on a train ride commuting to work, and on social media. His relationship with America, presented in his work, takes different shapes, forms, and colors. His illustrations can offer another way for us to reflect, to see the strangeness, and to agree and find beauty in the differences."

Friends of Dittmar,

Northwestern University is taking action to keep our community as safe as possible through the spread of COVID-19. As a result, it is with sadness that we announce our 2020 Community Exhibit, "Stories from the Second Page," and all April events scheduled in Dittmar will be cancelled. Our website has been updated with this information. Thank you for supporting Dittmar and we look forward to returning with great exhibitions soon. For recommendations related to COVID-19 and University precautions, please visit:

As Northwestern continues to closely monitor the spread of Coronavirus/COVID-19, this website will provide timely information on campus safety, self-isolation policies and other guidance for the Northwestern community, as it becomes available.

Upcoming at Dittmar:

Oya: Borders of History by Hale Ekinci

Referencing the tradition of oya (narrow lace trimmings used as edging on headdresses of women and household textiles in the Middle East), the exhibition explores transcultural communication and translation—translation of culture, identity, tradition, and gendered labor. Both oya and ornamentation hold symbolic meaning that is used as secret communication by their creators—mainly women. Similar to the construction of identity, through an additive process of embedding symbols and densely layered imagery, Oya: Borders of History showcases painted and embroidered colorful family portraits. The obscured portraits play with the malleability of identity and cultural representation while combining disparate domestic and fine arts materials, aesthetic traditions, and women’s work.

"10 years ago, i painted a burning letter “a” on one side of a salvaged window whose glass looked-into another world. On the other side, the letter appeared in the sky above a deep valley where its unique light fired the rods and cones in the eyes of a typeface designer named 53947. The sublime vision “opened his mind to the possibility of everything” and granted him newfound omniscience. 10 years later, he attempts to capture the essence of this enlightenment in a new design, inspiring a journey that will encourage him to re-evaluate his perception of what is known." - lewis lain
