We are preparing for a major period of growth and transformation in 2026 and 2027 here at Gichigamiin Indigenous Nations Museum, including new exhibitions, expanded garden experiences, building renovations, and the development of a forthcoming teaching kitchen.

Beginning in October 2026, visitors of all ages will experience new exhibitions that highlight Indigenous histories, contemporary Native life, repatriation, foodways, and environmental stewardship across the Great Lakes. To prepare for this new chapter, the Museum’s exhibition space will be closed from July 20 through September 30, 2026, while staff install new exhibitions, develop new tours, and update the visitor experience.

We invite you to join us on Friday, June 26th at 6pm for a reception to close Living Stories: Contemporary Woodland Native American Art. Museum members and Native Community reception starts at 5pm. Light refreshments will be provided.

Living Stories officially opened in February 2025 and will officially close on June 30th. We have welcomed over 15,000 visitors to the exhibit! We have extended our hours this Friday for your last chance to see Living Stories. We want to say THANK YOU to each of the featured artists, our guest curator, and each of you for visiting the exhibit this past year and half.

Learn about adopting native plants into your garden space and find fellowship among fellow gardeners. Come hang out with our garden manager, Camille Billie, to learn about adopting native plants into your garden space and finding community among fellow gardeners. This month there will be:

✨Free seeds & volunteer garden weeding
✨Journaling prompts: reflection on our relationships to land, food and community
✨visitors are welcome to bring heirloom seeds or harvests from their gardens to trade with fellow gardeners

New Docent Info Session
Date: Thursday, June 18th
Time: 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM and 5:00 PM - 6:00 PM.

The Gichigamiin Indigenous Nations Museum will be debuting new field trip and tour programming in the autumn of 2026! To prepare, we will be training new and current docents on the new programs during the summer.

If you have been curious about volunteering as a tour docent at the GINM, now is an excellent time to join us! We look forward to seeing you there!

Living Stories – Artist Talk: Jim Terry
June 17, 2026 - Wednesday

Jim Terry is featured in our exhibition Living Stories: Contemporary Woodland Native American Art, set to close on June 30th, 2026.

Jim Terry is a Ho-Chunk storyteller who's called Chicago his home for the last ten thousand years or so. His graphic memoir "Come Home, Indio" was nominated for an Ignatz and was a finalist for the LA Times Bookprize. His comic-book essay "Paper Cuts", done in residency at The Newberry Library, is currently being taught in several schools and he has worked as a comics illustrator for almost two decades with everyone from Marvel to Heavy Metal. This August his prose will be published in the anticipated "Never Whistle At Night 2: Back For Blood" and he just completed the feature length film "Shank".

On Sunday, June 28th from 12-5pm, the Gichigamiin Indigenous Nations Museum will be a featured garden in the 2026 Evanston Garden Walk hosted by the Evanston Environmental Association.
