January Spotlight: Reagan, MLK Day & the Legacy of Equality

Did you know?
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.—one of America’s most influential civil rights leaders—helped end nearly 100 years of legalized segregation through his vision, courage, and unwavering belief in justice.

After receiving support from Ambassador Steve Rhodes who was special assistant for governmental affairs, on November 2, 1983, President Ronald Reagan signed the bill establishing Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a federal holiday. Coretta Scott King and the King family were present in the White House Rose Garden as history was made.

But the journey wasn’t easy:
🕊️ Conversations about creating the holiday began soon after Dr. King’s assassination.
🏛️ Several states recognized MLK Day as early as 1973, but federal approval faced delays due to political tensions, economic concerns, and Cold War–era accusations about King’s views.
🇺🇸 By the 1980s, the nation shifted—Americans were reevaluating both civil rights progress and the Vietnam War. This paved the way for Congress to pass the bill in 1983.

Although President Reagan initially had reservations, his Eureka College values—rooted in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)—reminded him that all people are equal in God’s eyes and deserving of fairness and opportunity.

Even after the bill’s signing, it took until 2000 for all 50 states (with South Carolina as the final holdout) to officially recognize MLK Day.

📅 Dr. King’s Birthday: January 15, 1929

Happy Friday and Day Five of Museum Week. Today's theme is Really Together: Accessibility in Culture!

Accessibility in Culture is extremely important to the Ronald Reagan Museum. As part of this effort, the museum has been working to increase accessibility to its collections and objects. To fulfill this, we have created a website with access to the digital catalog for the Reagan Museum and Eureka College Archives collections, as well as our new mobile app. These are just the first steps in our plan to increase accessibility. Please stay connected with us via our social media accounts, our collection website, our mobile application, and our upcoming quarterly newsletter.
