The Vought F4U Corsair's distinctive bent wing wasn't just for looks — it solved an engineering problem with the largest propeller ever mounted on a fighter. Fast enough to reach 446 mph, deadly enough to rack up an 11-to-1 kill ratio against Japanese aircraft, and iconic enough to anchor a 1970s TV series. Our Museum's Corsair is a half-scale replica built by hand in Concrete, Washington, donated to OASM in 1997.

Lt. Col. Dean Abbott of Klamath Falls, Oregon flew F-86s in Korea, earned a Distinguished Flying Cross, survived 285 combat sorties as a Forward Air Controller in Vietnam, and retired with over 4,000 flight hours.

He then spent his retirement whistling every day and volunteering right here at the Oregon Air & Space Museum. His favorite expression? "Wheeeee!" Dean served on our board of directors and was part of this museum's story until he passed in 2019 at 91.

Meet the RLU-1 Breezy.

Hap Saabye of Salem, Oregon spent two and a half years building it by hand — June 1969 to December 1971. When he finally flew it on January 4, 1972, it was just the beginning.

Over the next two decades, Hap flew air shows up the entire West Coast, performing loops, spins, and slow passes in this open-cockpit, wind-in-your-face machine.

His first passenger? His wife, Betty Lou. His last? Also Betty Lou. In between: 1,705 others.

Lady Nelda says hi and that you should come by for a visit. We're open Thursday - Saturday from 12 - 4 pm.

Lady Nelda is a North American Aviation P-51 Mustang, an American long-range, single-seat fighter and fighter-bomber used during World War II and the Korean War, among other conflicts. The Mustang was designed in 1940 by a team headed by James H. Kindelberger of North American Aviation (NAA).

Artemis II launched today at 6:35 pm Eastern from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on the first crewed journey to go around the moon since 1972. On board is Commander Reid Wiseman, Pilot Victor Glover, and Mission Specialists Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen.

The Capsule Commander (CAPCOM) is Eugene-native Dr. Stanley G. Love.
