Friday's All-Woman Spacewalk: The Basics

"The first all-woman spacewalk is a milestone worth noting and celebrating as the agency looks forward to putting the first woman and next man on the Moon by 2024 with NASA’s Artemis lunar exploration program" NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration

Friday’s spacewalk – the first to be conducted entirely by women – is generating public interest we normally don’t get for a spacewalk.

The Cold Blue could be an interesting item on WWII history. Playing May 23rd at 7:30.

THE COLD BLUE is a meditation on youth, war and trauma, and stands as a tribute to one of the world's great filmmakers and the men of the 8th Air Force who flew mission after suicidal mission in the Second World War.

Battleship Missouri Memorial

The early morning attack at the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, shocked the country and propelled America into World War II.

The Dec. 7, 1941 attack killed 2,335 Americans and wounded 1,143 more. The U.S. lost 18 ships, including five battleships. A day later, U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt described Dec. 7 as a “date which will live in infamy.”

Today, Dec. 7 is known as “National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day” or “Pearl Harbor Day.” We remember.

How many of you would have taken a ride in this thing given the chance?!

We recently took new photographs of the Mercury Friendship 7 spacecraft following its conservation. This is the same spacecraft that John Glenn piloted into Earth orbit, an American first. The images reveal details of the spacecraft that can be easy to overlook when taking the capsule in as a whole. Are you able to pinpoint the circles in the capsule's heat shield where NASA extracted samples to test durability? Or what about the eye chart inside the capsule that John Glenn was asked to use to test his vision?

We've got more insider insights in our newest story: http://s.si.edu/friendship7closeup

CAUGHT IN THE WIDOW'S WEB

As touched on a few days ago, another seriously cool aircraft that gets all too little attention is Northrop's elegant P-61 Black Widow. This stunning twin-boom three-seat night-fighter can't help but impress with its radar-directed ordnance of four 20 mm cannon and four .50 cal. machine guns.
It's rarity today can perhaps be put down, in part at least, to the small production numbers with just over 700 built. Now just four remain, three of which are in museums (NMUSAF, Dayton; NASM, Udvar-Hazy and BASM, China), with one being restored to airworthy condition by the Mid-Atlantic Air Museum, representing one of the most significant restoration projects ever undertaken. There is a while yet to go on the project but the team has performed miracles to bring this important machine back to life over the past 27 years. The warbird world owes the MAAM team a huge debt of gratitude for their selfless dedication to this very worthy cause.
