Today's artifact Friday comes from Fendall Hall !! This fire screen at Fendall Hall was hand-sewn by Katherine Louise Dent Hurt, daughter of Capt. Stouten Hubert Dent and Anna Beall Young Dent.

Victorian fire screens were used to protect occupants in the room from excessive heat from the open hearths and to shield clothing and fabrics from possible embers. The screen would also cover the fireplace to make the room more presentable when not in use. Many of these screens were hand-embroidered, painted, or wood-carved.

Fendall Hall will be closed on Friday, August 21, 2026, as we welcome Auburn University's new Architectural Virtual Library team.

The Architecture Virtual Library is traveling across Alabama to 3D scan historic buildings, creating digital models that will help preserve and showcase our state’s architectural heritage for generations to come.

This exciting project is being completed in partnership with Main Street Alabama and is supported by a grant awarded by the Alabama Historical Commission.

We are thrilled that Fendall Hall was selected to be part of this important preservation project.

Thank you for your understanding as we take part in preserving Fendall Hall- and Alabama's architectural history- in a whole new way!

What a fantastic two days at our Patterns & Puzzles Day Camp! 🧩✨

Our group of eight campers stayed busy putting their creativity and problem-solving skills to work through hands-on activities and challenges. They designed colorful string art, hammered nails like pros, tackled fun math activities, cooked delicious treats, raced through laser maze games, and explored the house with scavenger hunts.

It was wonderful to watch their confidence grow as they worked together, tried new skills, and discovered that learning can be both creative and fun!

Thank you to our amazing campers for making these two days such a success. Thank you also to Jill Wachs with Barbour County 4-H and volunteers Jessie and Bill Brown. We loved spending time with each of you and hope to see you back at Fendall Hall for another adventure soon! ❤️

Our patriotic Petals and Prosecco was a blast 🎆🎆🎆!!! We had a great turn out and enjoyed a fun time with friends. Thank you to everyone who participated!

Thank you to Laura Cutchen with Cotton and Kudzu for providing the flowers and instructing the class and also to Kaye Hall for assisting. We couldn’t do it without you two!!
