Rahawa Haile set out on the AT during one of the most tumultuous periods in our political history. The story she wrote about it for Outside in 2017 hit a nerve, and encouraged many others to get out on the trail. We followed up with her to find out what scared her the most, the one piece of gear she...

National parks offer a unique experience for watching wildlife. But with that privilege comes responsibility. Visitors are responsible for their own safety and for the safety of the animals, too. Simply put, keep your distance—no touching, no feeding, no harassing. See more tips to watch wildlife safely at https://www.nps.gov/subjects/watchingwildlife

The North American Elk (Cervus canadensis) rut (mating season) is a magical time in Rocky Mountain National Park. During the rut, bull elk gather cows and calves in groups called ‘harems’. Bulls aggressively guard their harems from other bull elk, as well as humans and vehicles!

It’s important to keep a generous distance from elk during the rut. The general ‘rule of thumb’ is to make a thumbs up, extend your arm all the way, close one eye, and see if you can hide the animal with your thumb. If you can see the animal, give it more space.

Learn more about elk at on the park's webpage: https://www.nps.gov/romo/learn/nature/elk.htm
