I have been studying the life of Moses since my youth. It’s a story every student of the Bible/Torah knows something about. And the lessons from his stories never cease.
I have long desired to create a sculpture of Moses. When the director of the Camporee, Pastor Ron Whitehead invited me to consider such a sculpture, I began to ponder what to focus on, what to include and exclude. It was not an easy choice.
Moses spent many days and hours directly communing with God. At one point he pleaded to see God’s face with no barrier or veil (Show me your glory). Such a request reminds me of how precious our loved ones are to us, and how important it is to see their face. That’s where Moses was in his relationship with God, and at the end of his life on Mount Nebo, one thing he desired above all else; to be with and to see God face to face, I chose that moment to be the primary point of the composition.
Michelangelo’s best known sculptures are the David, the Pieta and the Moses. The Moses is by far the best known three-dimensional depiction of this significant biblical figure. To the best of my knowledge, no sculptor had ever memorialized the specific event in this new sculpture. Historically, most depictions of Moses focus on the Ten Commandments event.
By choosing this point of his life, it allowed me to focus on one of the most precious aspects of his story; his intimate connection with God that grew over the span of his 120 years. And it also made it possible to depict portions of his life chronologically in small scenes surrounding the main figure.
Even though this sculpture is only 3/4 life-size, it is a major work in that it is comprised of seven full compositions, each with dynamic movements, interesting drapery, full of emotions and details.
I really wanted to create a strong work that not only tells a story, but invites the viewers to reflect on the vastness of this Godly man’s miraculous life and his contributions.
The first five books of the Bible that are attributed to Moses combined with the four Gospels provide answers to all of humanity’s questions: origins, wisdom, history, law, health, and meaning or purpose. It’s difficult to over-estimate the vast power and value of this man’s life. All, because he humbly accepted God’s call to be of service to others.
