The San Gabriel Historical Society has started field trips to historical sites around northern New Mexico. All members of the San Gabriel Historical Society are invited to attend. For our first field trip on March 11th we went to see the retrospective exhibition of Policarpio Valencia’s embroideries at the Museum of International Folk Art. Our visit was enhanced with a guided tour by Carrie Hertz, Ph.D., Curator of Textiles and Dress. Policarpio Valencia of Santa Cruz de la Cañada (1853–1931) was a farmer, salt trader, acequia mayordomo, mill operator, elected justice of the peace, Hermano Penitente, and folk philosopher who also painstakingly embroidered tapestries containing colorful wordplay-loving messages for living. Join the San Gabriel Historical Society and join us for future field trips.

Wow, what a wonderful reception we had at the Bond House Museum on Saturday January 31st for the Northern New Mexico Artist Invitational curated by James Espinoza. Thank you to the artists, family and friends for participating and a special thank you to Edith Brown and Robin Rodar for preparing and setting up the reception food and tables. It was amazing how cheerful this was despite the loss of electricity for most of the day.
