YAY! A New Tool! This week we got a much needed connector for our tanks. The Sentinel Safety-Z uses a unique reverse disconnect feature that will not come apart with a straight pull. This feature prevents accidental release of the coupler even when pulled over the edges of steel plates. It might not seem all that exciting, but to us this is a great addition to the shop and for shop safety. Thanks again to for picking these up.

Historical Society members designed an old fashioned blacksmith shop and learning center using corrugated sheet metal and borrowed parts from the old shop. In the spring of 1993, they completed the construction. Artifacts donated by the descendants of Tom Bandy who established the blacksmith shop in Escondido in 1908, were placed around the shop, and continue to be used today. Phil Ewing, who bought the shop from Albert Bandy in 1967, agreed to teach the art of blacksmithing in the newly rebuilt facility. Ewing is not only a blacksmith, but a wheelwright and carriage woodworking specialist.

As hard-steel is hammered on an anvil, sparks will fly, but a different type of spark took hold when a reconstructed blacksmith shop was erected in Grape Day Park. From the day of the original historic structure's demolition in downtown Escondido, to the opening ceremony in Grape Day Park, the sparks of one man's determination made it possible. Inspiration came from Escondido Historical Society member, and owner of Hollandia Dairy, Arie DeJong. With a team of community members, they devised a plan to build a working blacksmith shop. Phil Ewing, Escondido's blacksmith, drew a rough sketch of this building, taking inspiration from the Tom Bandy & Son blacksmith shop, built in 1947.
