Pea River Historical Society sends its deepest condolences to the Gilmer family for the loss of Nell Gilmer. She was an amazing woman that loved her family and cared deeply about historical preservation.

Some of you have purchased one of her rag rugs from our gift shop. What you may not know is she donated the proceeds from those sales to the society and the John Coffee Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution.

Our gift shop will open late on Monday so that our volunteers may attend her services. Please keep her family and the entire Elba community in your thoughts as they process this tremendous loss.

Mary Nell Wilson Gilmer, age 91, of Elba, Alabama, passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday morning, April 14, 2026. A native of Coffee County, she was born on November 25, 1934, the eldest of seven children of Lawrence and Ruth Smith Wilson of the Curtis community between Elba
