We are grateful to the family of the late Patricia Renner for the donation of artifacts highlighting the life of Broome County’s well-known and well-loved naturalist and taxidermist, Lee Loomis (1896-1979). Lee was a native of Broome County who loved nature throughout his life. As an adult, Lee became a top-notch taxidermist who seemed to bring his animal subjects to life. In the 1960’s he spent a great deal of time designing the New York State Wildlife Building at the Woodland Museum in Cooperstown. Lee was generous with the creations from his love of nature. In 1975, he donated his collection of over 2500 specimens to the Roberson Center for the Arts and Sciences in Binghamton. Many of these beautiful specimens remain in Roberson’s Naturetrek Room. He also donated collections to Binghamton University, Broome Community College and the University of California, Bakersfield. The Finch Hollow Center has housed specimens in their Lee Loomis Room.

George F. Johnson loved the game of golf, and believed it should not be reserved for only the wealthy. So he built the Enjoie Golf Course in 1927 for all to enjoy, keeping the cost of a round of golf and the rental of a golf bag affordable for the average EJ worker even in the 1920’s. In his words….”the poor can play golf just as cheaply as going to the movies, and it’s better for their health. Give men comfort to live and play then you can work them hard and they will be ready for more.” We included a 1939 Enjoie Golf Course score card in the post.
