Nevada Northern Railway

Nevada Northern Railway Time stopped at the Nevada Northern Railway. It’s as if the workers went to lunch and never came back. It’s not your typical museum. It’s touchable history. S.

The Nevada Northern Railway Museum is dedicated to the restoration, preservation, interpretation, and operation of the Nevada Northern Railway historic facilities, yards, and rail collection. They left behind a complete railroad, now a National Historic Landmark. Today the railroad is still operating after a century, loving cared for by the non-profit Nevada Northern Railway Foundation. Instead of relics in glass cases or repainted old equipment on static display, here you witness touchable history. The complex is over 70 buildings and structures on 56 acres with 30 miles of track. Instead of going to one building, here you are encouraged to explore the complex. It’s an operating historical railroad, instead of relics in glass cases or repainted old equipment on static display, here you witness a working steam railroad. It surrounds you. It’s gritty. It’s dirty. It smells of coal smoke, creosote and sweat. It has not been prettified, it is the real McCoy. The Nevada Northern Railway is so much more than a train ride. Here you can experience what it is like to be the engineer of the Iron Horse. Our Be the Engineer Experience puts you in the cab of 100 tons of steam locomotive with your hand on the throttle. Or attend Railroad Reality Week, essentially a dude ranch for train fans. Experience up close and personal what it takes to keep a 19th century railroad operating in the 21st century. Or experience spending the night in a working railroad caboose in the middle of the train yard. There is no other place in the U. like the Nevada Northern Railway

Here you can take a peek behind the curtain of history. Visitors can go into the shops and watch as century old techniques are still used today. And you can climb aboard a steam powered passenger train and experience travel from the last century. Visiting the Nevada Northern Railway is an adventure. We’re located on the Loneliest Road in America. The Nevada Northern Railway Museum, Depot and Gift Shop is located at 1100 Avenue A, Ely, Nevada, begin your visit in the Depot. There you will receive your tickets, a map of the grounds and the safety rules. You are encouraged to walk through the grounds. Your patronage helps preserve this National Historic Landmark and supports ongoing Museum restoration projects. For more details visit www.nnry.com or give us a call (775) 289-2085. ALL ABOARD!

🌕 What if you could ride the rails… under the moonlight?

You can.

Climb aboard a handcar and help power your way down the tracks after dark, with the full moon lighting the way. No locomotive. No motor. Just you, your crew, and the railroad.

It’s a completely different way to experience the Nevada Northern Railway — and trust us, the railroad looks a little different after the sun goes down. 👀

The Moon is Full this week, reaching 99.9% illumination on the morning of September 26th, when it lies near the ringed planet Saturn. The night before, the faint planet Neptune lies about halfway between the Moon and Saturn. Visible in a pair of standard binoculars, Neptune can be seen as a bright pale blue star in such optical aid. The eighth planet was actually discovered by Galileo in the winter of 1612-13, but because he didn’t recognize that it had moved, he simply noted it as a star. It wasn’t until 1846 that Neptune was officially discovered, its location on the sky predicted mathematically by French and English astronomers. This was the first time a celestial object’s existence and location were determined purely by mathematics!

Rising in the east is the Great Square of Pegasus, looking more diamond-shaped as it rises. As it reaches the meridian–a line from due north through due south, dividing the sky into eastern (rising) and western (setting) halves–the diamond gradually rotates over into a square, and then back into a diamond as it nears the western horizon. The Great Square can be used to find other nearby constellations: the Circlet of Pisces lies just south of the Square; drawing a line through the northwest and southwest corners of the Square brings you to the star Fomalhaut, in the constellation of the Southern Fish; a line drawn from the southeast corner through the northwest corner points toward Deneb, brightest star in the constellation Cygnus; and a line from the southwest corner through the northeast skims past the Andromeda Galaxy (M31) on its way toward the constellation Perseus.

Our Great Basin Star Trains may have concluded for the year, but passengers on the Sunset, Stars, and Champagne Trains can take in the sunset and evening stars with complimentary champagne! Tickets for the 2027 Great Basin Star Trains are on sale now but disappearing fast, so be sure to reserve yours today–don’t miss out!

🧵🚂 FIVE DAYS LEFT—EVERY STITCH SUPPORTS LOCOMOTIVE 40! 🚂🧵

In just five days, this extraordinary handmade quilt will have a new home!

The Sagebrush Quilters Guild spent months creating this one-of-a-kind tribute to the Nevada Northern Railway. Working entirely without a pattern, they carefully selected, cut, and placed every piece of fabric before stitching the railroad’s story to life.

From the stars shining above the railway to the rugged Nevada rocks beneath the rails, every detail was created with purpose. Approximately the size of a twin bed, the quilt includes a sleeve on the back so the winner can display it as beautiful wall art.

Your raffle ticket could win this remarkable piece—but it also helps return a Nevada treasure to operation. All proceeds benefit the restoration of Locomotive 40, the Official State Locomotive of Nevada and the Pride of the Nevada Northern Railway.
