Before Chelsea Clinton crossed the finish line of the 130th Boston Marathon on Boylston Street in April 2026, she had to earn her way there the same as every other runner, with no shortcuts and no exceptions. In the women's 45 to 49 age group, the Boston qualifying standard is 3 hours and 45 minutes. Chelsea ran the 2025 New York City Marathon in 3 hours, 44 minutes, and 22 seconds, qualifying for Boston by just 38 seconds. She had run six marathons before Boston, including the New York City race four times. She registered under a pseudonym to avoid attention, listing herself as Margaret Smith, a name deliberately chosen to honor Margaret Chase Smith, the Maine congresswoman who was the first woman in American history to serve in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, and the first woman to actively seek a major party's presidential nomination. Chelsea had written about her before in her book series for young readers, celebrating women who stood up in the face of being told they could not. She then ran 26.2 miles on a notoriously punishing course, split almost evenly across both halves, and finished in a personal best. At the finish line, her parents, Bill and Hillary Clinton, were waiting to place the medal around her neck, alongside 2014 Boston champion Meb Keflezghi. The whole thing was exactly as human as it sounds.
