A few words from Alan and Lucy:
We share now, with heavy but full hearts, that the Sharp Art Gallery will be permanently closing next Sunday, November 28th. We’ve done what we set out to do - to return the artwork of Gene Sharp to Iowa - and we’ve done a lot more - and it’s time for the next adventure! Don’t worry, Elkader: Lucy (now a private citizen) IS NOT LEAVING! Well, maybe for a few weeks in January, to somewhere warmer …
When, in October of 2018, Alan traveled to Elkader to research what was, at the time, an unlikely plan - to relocate Lucy from Colorado, to open an art gallery featuring the work of her father / his grandfather, Gene Sharp, in the small Iowan town of Gene’s birth - we couldn’t have imagined the life awaiting us. Alan remembers, that very cold October weekend, walking streets he’d known only as a child, when the Sharps and Halls still lived in neighboring homes on Carter Street - realizing, in 2018, that he no longer knew a single (living) soul in Elkader.
How that would soon change! Three years later, Lucy is an Elkader homeowner and Alan, as he is wont to do, eagerly comes and reluctantly goes. From the start, the Driftless area welcomed and embraced us, and continues to do so today.
At the Gallery, from Gene Sharp Midwest features such as “Boats and Shores” and “Barns and Farms,” to his international travels and commercial work; and guest artists (to name just a few of the greats) such as Scott Boylan, Vicky Hubbell, Rabecca Hennessey, Rebecca Kobos and Art Geisert; to a variety of classes that showcased the hidden talents of community members young and young-at-heart, we’ve enjoyed every minute of it.
Wait, no, that’s a lie. There was 2020 … But, while the Gallery doors remained locked, our iPhones took you on tours highlighting the best of the Gallery - videos which remain available for viewing on our website.
Speaking of which: the website sharpartiowa.com will live on indefinitely, where you can view the Gene Sharp collection in brilliant high-resolution, where you can continue to buy prints of your favorite pieces shipped to your homes, and where you can rewatch our amateur videography until the end of time (or the internet,) fondly recalling the quarantine days of, as Alan says in Episode 5, “I googled how to cut your own hair this morning …”
Future plans include improvements to the website and online store, and continued classes - location to be determined - maybe even in Lucy’s giant workshop/garage, which is, itself, now part of the Gene Sharp collection, its exterior newly painted with larger-than-life flowers first penned by Gene himself more than a half a century ago. No, folks, Sharp Art isn’t going anywhere …
But if you’d like to see Gene’s original work one last time, as well as that of our final featured artist - Lucy Sharp! - stop by the Gallery on Wednesday, Friday, Saturday or Sunday. Prints, magnets, cards, and art supplies will be half off, and, as always, viewing of the artwork and good conversation is free!
Final hours:
Wednesday, Nov 24, 10 am to 4 pm
Friday, Nov 26, 10 am to 4 pm
Saturday, Nov 27 - 10 am to 4 pm
Sunday - LAST DAY - Nov 28, 11 am to 2 pm
Thank you, Elkader and far, far beyond, for everything!!!
Love, Lucy and Alan of the Sharp Art Gallery, Elkader, Iowa
