"Resting On My Laurels", Sophia Sutherland's show of "overtly whimsical and covertly philosophical" Sculptures, Drawings and Paintings, opens at the Artists Collective in Elk (ACE) on May 1st and continues through May 30th.There will be an opening reception on May 9th from 1-3 pm. This will be Sutherland's 9th solo exhibition at the ACE gallery since 2012.

In this show, Sutherland will show about 27 newly discovered combinations and relationships of her earlier works. One ambiguous large torso sculpture titled "Blind Pyramid" will be in the exhibition. It has a layered surface of gauze, gesso and multi colored markings that has given it a feeling of mystery.

There will also be a group of drawings and paintings inspired, in part, by many teachers and artists throughout the centuries.

Sutherland, 85, has long done drawing and painting, but began as a potter some years ago and now creates sculptural works in clay and bronze when she is not teaching her cat, Bijou, more yoga stretches.

The gallery is located at 6301 S. Hwy 1, in Greater Downtown Elk, between the Post Office and the Maritime Cafe. It is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Phone: (707) 877-1128.

Jane Castner Mothersill is the featured artist of the month in April at The Artists' Collective in Elk. She is a painter of "inspired realism" – interpretations and visual expression emanating from her interactions with nature, people, cultures and ideas. While unequivocally representational, she works to convey broader messages in its ex*****on - seeking to elicit emotional and intellectual responses from the viewer. Concepts such as truth, beauty and conflict, as well as temporal and cultural elements, underpin her work – which encompasses oil, pastel, charcoal and mixed media paintings as well as terra cotta and bronze sculpture.

She says: "My landscape paintings are completed substantially on site – where I can feel the intimacy of nature and the confluence of elements that impact one's perception of their surroundings. My still lives, which are undertaken primarily in my studio, are often symbolic in conveying a sense of beauty that lies in the world within – occasionally incorporating diverse and culturally specific elements in telling their stories. My figurative works tend to be emotional, conveying feelings of or toward my subject."

Jane graduated from Georgetown University with a degree in humanities and international affairs, then moved to the Philippines where she learned Chinese brush painting. Upon returning to the US, she studied painting, drawing and sculpture full time at the Art Students League of New York and was awarded a full merit scholarship to attend the Graduate School of Figurative Art at the New York Academy - where she received an MFA in studio art in 1990. Her education has also included studying with a wide range of practicing artists in the US, France and in Asia. She lived abroad in Tokyo and Hong Kong for 16 years and maintained a home and studio in the Loire Valley in France for 33 years.

She currently reside full time at The Sea Ranch, CA where her studio is located, but continues to spend extensive time traveling and painting in locations around the world.

The show will run from April 10th through Apr. 30th, with a reception for the artist on 2nd Saturday, April 11th, in the afternoon from 1 to 3 pm. The gallery is located at 6031 S. Hwy. 1, in Greater Downtown Elk, Calif, between the post office and the Maritime Cafe. The gallery is open daily from 10 am to 5 pm.

For March, The Artists’ Collective in Elk presents a new body of work
by Bryn Elizan Harris featuring small-format paintings with an outsized
visual impact, entitled “Dancing Light: Small in Scale. Bold in
Presence.” Using textured acrylic and layered metal leaf, Harris
explores light, atmosphere, and horizon through abstracted landscapes
inspired by ocean, cloud, forest, and floral forms. Reflective metals
emerge beneath painted surfaces, creating depth, contrast, and shifting
luminosity that rewards close viewing.

This series marks a material expansion for the artist, moving beyond
traditional gold leaf to explore how color, texture, and metallic
surfaces interact. Intimate in scale yet confident in presence, the
works function as both image and object—quietly powerful and
responsive to light.

Harris will also be teaching a painting workshop that morning at the
gallery.

The show will run from March 1st to the 31st with a reception for the
artist on 2nd Sat., March 14th, from 1 to 3 pm. The Artists’
Collective is located at 6031 S. Hwy 1, in Elk.

The Artists' Collective at Elk presents a double exhibition for the month of February, of ceramic figurative sculpture by Sophia Sutherland, and the digital artwork of our newest artist, Kalahan Stoker.

Sophia has been an artist and dancer since she was a child. "I have noticed that we are all artists," she says. "It was my good fortune to have been encouraged to express my creative spirit as I grew up. I drew, painted and played in clay as a child. "The medium of clay moves me into a dialog between my hands and the clay, allowing me to enter into another dimension that I and my clay tribe call 'the zone'. A delicious place. A place to re-create the world and myself.

Sophia's show is entitled Adornments/A Clowder of Cats. The show will feature new "hot out of the kiln" works of art. Each of the sculptures has an adornment added. "My works are overtly whimsical and covertly philosophical. I move between the 2nd, 3rd, and finally the 4th dimension. This dimension is where I can explore with my viewers the lost stage with creativity. I am grateful for this gift of when I am connected to my 'art spirit'."

Kalahan Stoker is a digital illustrator based on the Mendocino coast, where the redwoods and the ocean offer a quiet space for healing. After a period of learning how to navigate life with endometriosis and psoriatic arthritis, she has found the strength and inspiration to return to her art. Much of this new energy comes from time spent with her partner outdoors where they forage for wild mushrooms and hike the coastal trails with their three dogs.

Her work explores the playful side of nature and food, specifically through her charming digital drawings of avocado characters engaging in everyday life. Even though she is personally allergic to avocados and several other foods, she finds joy in giving them their own vibrant personalities. These illustrations are a lighthearted reflection of her life on the coast and the simple happiness of being back at her digital canvas.

The show will run from Feb. 1st through Feb. 28th. There will be a reception for the artist on the first Sat. in February, Feb. 7th, from 1 to 3 pm. The Artists' Collective at Elk is located at 6031 S. Hwy. 1, in Greater Downtown Elk, between the post office and the Maritime Cafe. It is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (707) 877-1128.

The Artist's Collective in Elk will present the works of Bruce Jones for the month of Dec. Bruce moved to Gualala in 2000. He has now lived there 25 years -- more than twice as long as any other place in his life.

You will see three different types of art in this show:

Black and white drawings in ink, mostly sumi ink which works much like watercolor, and pencil. Black and white gives a kind of drama you just don't get from color.

Very colorful pictures of ladies, maybe even with color overdone. They are about half watercolor and half colored pencil: Prismacolor, wax based rather than clay based, which facilitates blending. Some of the ladies came from "life drawing" at Gualala Arts, and some from pictures in magazines. You see some fine line ink in many of them.

Larger watercolor landscapes of the coast, from Sea Ranch to Elk. This is his primary art medium over the past 20 years. He tries to capture the feel of the place, sometimes "plein air" sometimes from photos.

All his art is fairly realistic although he feel free to shift reality around. His usual approach is first to decide what to emphasize and what to leave out. Then he tries to leave his mind open to taking advantage of happy accidents as he paints and draws.

Bruce has always painted and drawn, but never made serious attempts at selling his art until he moved here. He now sells his art in three galleries, plus most years on the annual Studio Discovery Tour. He draws, paints, makes small sculptures, and writes short plays, stories and poems just about every day, plus hanging a lot of art shows. He also does landscaping projects and maintains trails for Gualala Arts and the Redwood Coast Land Conservancy, which often seems to him like both art forms and exercise programs.

Bruce says: "Our coastal seascapes, landscapes and forests make me feel wonderful, both the beauty and the serenity -- I hope they make you happy too."

There will be an opening reception for the show on 2nd Sat, Dec. 13th, from 1 to 3, with refreshments. The gallery is located at 6031 S. Hwy 1, Elk, CA. 707-877-1128, between the post office and the Maritime Cafe.

The Artists' Collective at Elk will be having a double show in November,
with the work of our long-time glass artist Cynthia Myers of Little
River, and our newer photography/collage artist Perry Hoffman of
Gualala.

Cynthia Myers is a talented Glass Etching Artist who lives in Little River. She has lived and worked here on the North Coast for over 25 years, and this is where she gets much of her inspiration. Her etchings on hand-blown glass are featured in collections and galleries throughout Europe, Japan, and the United States.

Cynthia is self taught in her craft of sandblasting and carving on custom made blown glass. She is well known, and her work depicting the nature that surrounds her is unique. With an eye for subtlety and detail, Cynthia employs a shadowing technique that gives her artistry depth and dimension. She has developed a reputation for her sand carved glass vases with decorative exteriors and cut-away rims.

Perry has been taking photographs since he was 5 years old. Currently photographing wildlife in the the north coast. Bobcats, Pileated Woodpeckers, Deer, Seals and Skunks are just some of the wildness he has captured. As well as being a photographer he has been doing digital collage since the 80's and will be exhibiting some of this work as well. Best known for mosaics and a ceramic artist as well. You will always be surprised by his mediums and surreal imagery.

There will be an opening for the two artists on 2nd Sat., Nov. 8th, from
1 to 3 pm. Come and meet the artists! The gallery is located at 6031 S.
Hwy 1, between the post office and the Maritime cafe. The gallery is
open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
